than any of the other grass mixtures when collected in the cured stage. Since aphosphorosis did not occur during the winter blood sampling period, phosphorus accumulated during the growing period on winter and alpine ranges may influence blood phosphorus during the winter when forage phosphorus is in short supply. At this time it is not known to what degree a free-ranging animal can accumulate phosphorus (April to October) nor the ease with which it is mobilized from storage depots. Simesen (1963) states, “Bone mineral is readily mobilized to maintain the level of serum calcium, but less readily to maintain that of phosphorus, so that a low serum inorganic phosphate level is the first. sign of a deficiency of phosphorus.” Hays and Swenson (1970) suggest that bone phosphorus is readily mobilized. Serum inorganic phosphorus levels of my sheep did not indicate a state of deficiency. They were above 4 mg/lOO ml, the minimum level set by the National Research Council (1964) and Watkins and Knox (1945).

Genetic diversity and subdivision of 57 European and Middle-Eastern sheep breeds.
The population structure and genetic diversity of 57 European and Middle Eastern marginal and cosmopolitan sheep breeds from 15 countries were analysed by typing 31 microsatellite markers. Mean unbiased expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.63 in British Exmoor Horn to 0.77 in Albanian Ruda. South-eastern European and Middle-Eastern sheep breeds were significantly more variable than northwest...
متن کاملEvaluation of SCD and FASN Gene Expression in Baluchi, Iran-Black, and Arman Sheep
Background: With the increasing concern for health and nutrition, dietary fat has attracted considerable attention. The composition of fatty acids in the diet is important because they are associated with major diseases including cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The fatty acid synthase (FASN) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase (delta-9-desaturase) (SCD) genes affect fatty acid compositio...

Twinning trait is an important trait in sheep breeding. Reproductive traits differ greatly across sheep breeds, but also between sheep in a single flock. Identification of ewes with higher twinning rate and more raised lambs per year is an important parameter for breeding and farming success. A genome-wide haplotype association study, using 42,416 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) was cond...
متن کاملThe Effects of Pre-slaughter Stress and Season on the Activity of Plasma Creatine Kinase and Mutton Quality from Different Sheep Breeds Slaughtered at a Smallholder Abattoir
The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of pre-slaughter stress, season and breed on the activity of plasma creatine kinase (CK) and the quality of mutton. One hundred and seventy-three (173) castrated sheep from Dormer (DM), South African Mutton Merino (SAMM), Dorper (DP) and Blackhead Persian (BP) sheep breeds were used in the study. The animals were grouped according t...
متن کاملGenome-Wide Specific Selection in Three Domestic Sheep Breeds
BACKGROUND Commercial sheep raised for mutton grow faster than traditional Chinese sheep breeds. Here, we aimed to evaluate genetic selection among three different types of sheep breed: two well-known commercial mutton breeds and one indigenous Chinese breed. RESULTS We first combined locus-specific branch lengths and di statistical methods to detect candidate regions targeted by selection in...
