چکیده

This paper exlrmines the processing of visual information beyond the creation of the early representations. A fundamental requirement at this level is the capacity to establish visually abstract shape properties and spatial relations. This capacity plays a major role in object recognition, visually guided manipulation, and more abstract visual thinking. For the human visual system, the perception 6~ Jipatial properties and relations that are complex from a computational standpoint nevertheless often appears deceivingly immediate and effortless. The proficiency of the human system in analyzing spatial information far surpasses the capacities of current artificial systems. The study of the computations that underlie this competence may therefore lead to the development of new more eficient methods for the spatial analysis of visual information. The perception of abstract shape properties and spatial relations raises fundamental difficulties with major implications for the ojverall processing of visual informatioi. It will be argued that the computation of spatial relations divides the analysis of visual information into two main stages. The first is the bottomup creation of certain representations of the visible environment. The second stage involves the application of processes called ‘visual routines’ to the representations constructed in the first stage. These rou!ines can establish pro!lerties and relations that cannot be represented explicit/y in the initial representations. Visual routines are composed of sequences of elemental operations. Routines for different nroperties and relations share elemental’ operations. Using a fixed . set of basic operations, the visual syste:m can assemble different routines to extract an unbounded variety of shape properties and sp!atial relations. ‘This report describes research done at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Support for the laboratory’s artificial intelligence research is provided in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense under Office of Naval Research contract NOOOI4-BOC-0505 and in paxt by National Science Foundation Grant 79-211IlOMCS. a This article is a tutorial overview of a sample of central issues in visual cognition, focusing on the recognition of shapes and 4h iice representation of objects and spatiai’ relations in perception and imagery. Brief reviews of the state of the art are presented, followed by more extensive presentations of contemporary theories, findings, and open issues. I discuss various theories of shape...

Rationality, Memory and the Search for Counterexamples* Would like to Thank Alan Garnham for Commenting on an Earlier Draft of the Paper, and Julie Oakhill for Preparing Tables 1 and 3. Reprint Requests Should Be Sent To

Two experiments investigated the failure to select potential counterexamples in testing generalisations. Subjects had to test whether a description of the contents of an envelope (a set of diagrams) was true or false. Since any diagram that fits the description could be inside or outside the envelope without affecting the status of the description, the rational strategy is to choose diagrams th...

Level-ordering in lexical development.

This paper examines the claim that lexical word formation rules are ordered at three levels of application (Kiparsky, 1982). Lexical rules of affixation and compounding differ with respect to phonological effects, semantic regularity and productivity. With respect to these properties, rules can be assigned to one of three “levels” and are applied sequentially. Level-ordering predicts that irreg...

A Dipstick Sensor for Coulometric Acid-base Titrations

By performing an acid-base titration by coulometric generation of OHor H+ ions at an inert electrode in close proximity to the pH-sensitive gate of an ISFET, it is possible to determine the acid or base concentration of a solution using the ISFET as an indicator device for the equivalence point in the titration curve. Typical values for the titration time are 0.1 to 10 s for acid or base concen...

INVESTIGATIONS OF Mn(pyr)(aq) +2 AND PYRIDINE INTERCALATED CdzPzS~ LATTICES: MECHANISM OF INTERCALATION AND PERTURBATION OF THE HOST LATTICE

The lamellar transition metal Chalocogeno-Phosphates (MzPzS~) form an important family of two-dimensional semiconducting materials. The lamellar structure is formed by stacking S-M2z:~-(P-P),/:3-S units along a unique crystallographic axis. Under appropriate conditions, guest species can enter the space between the layers to form intercalation compounds. Two main mechanisms are presently propos...
