چکیده

The special status of word-initial /s/-consonant clusters has long been observed by researchers: Some /s/-initial sequences, such as /s/-stop clusters, violate the Sonority Sequencing Principle. In English, /s/ is the only word-initial consonant that may be followed by another homorganic consonant (e.g. /st-/, /sn-/), by either a nasal or a stop (e.g. /sm-/, /sn-/, /sp-/), or by a two-element consonant cluster (e.g. /spr-/, /spl-/, /str-/). It has also been noted that /s/-initial clusters are treated differently from other onset clusters by speakers of different ages and different languages (e.g. Fikkert 1994, Romani & Calabrese 1998, Barlow 2001). Yet, the structural status of /s/-initial clusters is still controversial. In recent studies of the acquisition of /s/-initial clusters, the initial /s/ has been analyzed as an element outside the initial syllable, termed either “extrasyllabic” (Fikkert 1994), an “adjunct” (Gierut 1999, Barlow 2001), or an “appendix” (Goad & Rose in press). Gierut (1999) provides the following structural comparison of obstruent-sonorant clusters and /s/-initial clusters:

The Adaptation of English Initial Clusters by Persian Learners

This study presents an overview of the different strategies that Persian learners of English employ to deal with initial clusters. While vowel epenthesis appears to be the most widespread repair strategy to conform such clusters to Persian phonotactics, the location of the epenthetic vowel varies. In this paper, we investigate two approaches that seek to explain the epenthetic site. The first o...

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

A Parametric Approach to Intonation Acquisition Research: Validation on Child-Directed Speech Data

This paper validates a parametric approach to intonation acquisition research [1] using child-directed speech data. An advantage of this approach is that it can be used for studying child speech as well as adult speech. Within the field of prosody acquisition it reconciles independent approaches to child prosody with ToBI-based approaches. In this paper we substantiate this claim by showing tha...

Word Initial Clusters in Acquisition

In this paper, I study the acquisition of consonant clusters by testing the production of Greek-speaking children. Using a non-word repetition task, I tested the order of acquisition of word initial and word medial s-obstruent (sT), obstruent-obstruent (TT) and obstruent-sonorant (TR) clusters in 59 children. The data presented here shed new light on the nature of word initial clusters that vio...

Describing the development of intonational categories using a target-oriented parametric approach

In this paper we analyze the relation between adults’ intonational categories as described in the ToBI framework and children’s intonation contours, using a parametric approach and cluster evaluation methods. In the field of prosody, an increasing number of studies on the development of intonation apply the intonational categories of adult speech described as a sequence of high (H) and low (L) ...
