Helping Smallstock Keepers Enhance Their Livelihoods: Improving Management of Smallholder Owned Sheep and Goats by Utilising Local Resources

چکیده
Gastrointestinal parasitic infections are a major constraint to small ruminant productivity in the tropics and subtropics, including Tanzania. This significantly reduces the economy and food supply to small farmers and their families. Earlier studies at the University of Nottingham (see for example Butter et al., 2000) have shown that feeding the extracted tannin from Quebracho (used in the leather industry) dramatically reduces the parasite burden of infected sheep. Tannins often occur in high concentrations in browse plants and could be used to control gastrointestinal parasites. A three-year project (R7424) funded by the DFID Livestock Production Programme, was, therefore, initiated in 1999 between Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania) and University of Nottingham (UK) to study the possibility of using locally available plant materials or their extracts to reduce parasitic burden in small ruminants. This approach has the potential to yield a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to using chemically based anthelmintics. This paper briefly outlines the project aims and achievements to date.

Rangeland zoning for sheep and goats common grazing in the Darmian Basin (South Khorasan Province)
Considering the poor condition of most rangelands of Iran, evaluation of rangeland potential and determination of suitability for continuous and optimal utilization seems necessary. The purpose of this study was to investigate the rangeland suitability for sheep and goat grazing using FAO and GIS methods. Therefore, three criteria including vegetation cover, water, and soil were studied. The ...

متن کاملRole of rainwater harvesting for improving the human well-being and ecosystem services
Ecosystem services are fundamental for human well-being and are the basis of rural livelihoods, particularly for poor people. Rainwater harvesting can serve as an opportunity to enhance ecosystem productivity, thereby improving livelihoods, human well-being, and economies. Rainwater harvesting has been shown to create synergies between landscape management and human well-being. These synergi...
متن کاملProduction objectives and breeding practices of urban goat and sheep keepers in West Africa: regional analysis and implications for the development of supportive breeding programs
To better understand the relative importance of the multi-purpose functions of small ruminants for their urban owners and related breeding practices including selection criteria, we undertook a comparative analysis across the West African cities of Kano (Nigeria), Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) and Sikasso (Mali). Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect the required information from ...
