A NOVEL PROCEDURE FOR MEASURING THE IMPACT FRACTURE TOUGHNESS KId WITH PRECRACKED CHARPY SPECIMENS

A procedure i s presented f o r determining the impact f r a c t u r e toughness K w i t h precracked Charpy specimens wi thout performing any load measurements.'?he Kid-val ue i s obtained from preestabl ished impact response curves and a measurement o f t h e t ime-to-fracture. The measuring technique i s f u l l y dynamic and does not impose any r e s t r i c t i o n s on t h e t e s t condit ions. The app l i c a b i l i t y o f the measuring procedure i s demonstrated by determining the impact f r a c t u r e toughness o f two d i f f e r e n t s tee ls a t d i f f e r e n t t e s t temperatures.
