چکیده

It has been almost ten years since the classic Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (Gazdar, Klein, Pullum, and Sag 1985) appeared. And like its predecessor, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar will probably become a classic too. Head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG) is the state of the art in what Pullum and Zwicky (1991) have called category-based syntax, and this book makes available to a wide audience recent developments in a grammatical framework used extensively in syntactically oriented research in natural language processing. Moreover, of the grammatical theories using inheritance-based grammars, a widespread tradition in the NLP community, HPSG achieves the widest coverage (vide the special issues of Computational Linguistics devoted to this topic in 1992). The book thus gives the computational linguist a good idea of how to apply the basic knowledge-representation ideas of inheritance and typing to state-of-the-art linguistic analyses. It also complements the more theoretically oriented works of Carpenter (1992) and Keller (1993) on typed-feature structures and their logic. So, although its intended audience is clearly primarily linguists, this book is essential

LexGram - a practical categorial grammar formalism -

We present the LexGram system, an amalgam of (Lambek) categorial grammar and Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), and show that the grammar formalism it implements is a well-structured and useful tool for actual grammar development.

Chart Parsing Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar

A Prolog chart parser for Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) is described. The HPSG formalism has undergone significant modification since Proudian and Pollard first introduced an HPSG chart parser in 1985. This paper describes the impact of these developments on chart parsing methodology. It also presents a critical evaluation of aspects of HPSG which emerges from our implementation.

Applying a Grammar-Based Language Model to a Simplified Broadcast-News Transcription Task

We propose a language model based on a precise, linguistically motivated grammar (a hand-crafted Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar) and a statistical model estimating the probability of a parse tree. The language model is applied by means of an N-best rescoring step, which allows to directly measure the performance gains relative to the baseline system without rescoring. To demonstrate that ...

A Coalgebraic Modelling of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar

This paper provides a coalgebraic modelling of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. HPSG is a licensing theory in the sense that grammaticality is defined in terms of abstract grammar principles, well-formedness conditions on linguistic analyses rather then by a set of rules that would explicitely generate an analysis. Since coalgebras are very well suited for modelling licensing theories, we ...

Dutch Cross Serial Dependencies in HPSG

We present an analysis of Dutch cross serial dependencies in Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar ((P&S(1994)]). We start out from the assumption that causative and perceptual verbs, like auxiliaries, can lexically`raise' the arguments of the non-nite verbs they govern to their own list of arguments through \argument composition" ((H&N(1989)]).
