The effect of wind mixing on the vertical distribution of buoyant plastic debris

چکیده
[1] Micro-plastic marine debris is widely distributed in vast regions of the subtropical gyres and has emerged as a major open ocean pollutant. The fate and transport of plastic marine debris is governed by poorly understood geophysical processes, such as ocean mixing within the surface boundary layer. Based on profile observations and a one-dimensional column model, we demonstrate that plastic debris is vertically distributed within the upper water column due to wind-driven mixing. These results suggest that total oceanic plastics concentrations are significantly underestimated by traditional surface measurements, requiring a reinterpretation of existing plastic marine debris data sets. A geophysical approach must be taken in order to properly quantify and manage this form of marine pollution. Citation: Kukulka, T., G. Proskurowski, S. Morét-Ferguson, D. W. Meyer, and K. L. The effect of particle properties on the depth profile of buoyant plastics in the ocean
Most studies on buoyant microplastics in the marine environment rely on sea surface sampling. Consequently, microplastic amounts can be underestimated, as turbulence leads to vertical mixing. Models that correct for vertical mixing are based on limited data. In this study we report measurements of the depth profile of buoyant microplastics in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, from 0 to 5 m d...
متن کاملAn evaluation of surface micro- and mesoplastic pollution in pelagic ecosystems of the Western Mediterranean Sea.
This study examines the distribution, abundance and characteristics of surface micro- and mesoplastic debris in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 41 samples were collected in 2011 (summer) and 2012 (summer). Results, firstly, revealed that micro- (<5 mm) and mesoplastic debris were widely and uniformly distributed in this area with average concentrations of 130,000 parts/km(2) and 5700 parts/km(2)...
متن کاملApplication of perfect mixing model for simulation of vertical roller mills
Vertical roller mills (VRMs) are well-established grinding equipment for various tasks in the coal and cement industry. There are few studies on simulation of VRMs. In this research work, application of perfect mixing model for simulation of a VRM in a cement grinding plant was investigated. Two sampling surveys were carried out on the VRM circuit. The samples and data from the first survey wer...

This article deals with the study of the two-dimensional mixed convection magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer of stagnation-point flow over a stretching vertical plate in porous medium filled with a nanofluid. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis in the presence of thermal radiation. The skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number an...
متن کاملQualitative Analysis of Plastic Debris on Beaches of Brunei Darussalam
Plastic debris is one of the major environmental concerns for the coastal area of Brunei Darussalam. It reduces the aesthetic appeals of the beaches in the country. The current study investigates marine debris on six different beaches of Brunei Darussalam along the South China Sea. Plastic was found the most abundant among whole debris by number (90.02%) and by weight (39.12%). It was classifie...
