Incorporating nutrients

چکیده
The objective of this paper is to analyze the Spanish demand for meat taking into account the consumer’s concern about the relationship between food diet and health. This concern is forcing food demand analysts to assume that consumer utility is a function of nutrients instead of simply the food products themselves. Nevertheless, these utility function arguments are not produced in the marketplace but rather at home. As a consequence, in this paper household production theory is followed in order to analyze Spanish demand for meat using the Quarterly National Expenditure Survey for 1999. Demands for several meat products (the input in the model) are derived from the translog cost function. Censored regression models are used in the estimation process, since many zero responses are reported. Five broad categories, eight nutrients and the most relevant socio-economic variables are considered. Finally, a set of elasticities is calculated with respect to all the variables included in the analysis. JEL Classification: D13, C24, I12

Incorporating Nutrients in Food Demand Analysis
This study explored the roles of nutrients in the demand for food through utility theory. The findings support the argument that nutrients play important roles in the demand for food. The 1987-88 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey data were used. The impacts of six nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, digestible fibers, and proteins) on the demand for five food groups (dairy, mea...
متن کاملFish and their Byproducts
Fish is a unique source of micro-nutrients. However, many parts of larger fish, such as the head and the bones, are discarded during fish processing despite the high levels of nutrients, and particularly micronutrients found in these parts. Thus the promotion and use of fish byproducts to create low-cost, high-quality food could help reduce malnutrition. This practice illustrates the nutritiona...
متن کاملEstimating nutrient intake from a food frequency questionnaire: incorporating the elements of race and geographic region.
Assignment of nutrient values to food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) items does not usually account for participant characteristics (besides age or sex) that may influence eating patterns. For the Southern Community Cohort Study, the authors developed and assessed results from a nutrient database system incorporating sex-, race-, and census-region-specific food lists, using 24-hour recall data f...
متن کاملPeriodic response to periodic forcing of the Droop equations for phytoplankton growth
The dynamics of a phytoplankton population growing in a chemostat under a periodic supply of nutrients is investigated with the model proposed by Droop. This model differs from the well-known Monod equations by incorporating nutrient storage by the cells. In spite of its nonlinearity and the time delays introduced by an internal nutrient pool, the model predicts a simple response to a periodic ...
متن کاملEffects of Land Use on Lake Nutrients: The Importance of Scale, Hydrologic Connectivity, and Region
Catchment land uses, particularly agriculture and urban uses, have long been recognized as major drivers of nutrient concentrations in surface waters. However, few simple models have been developed that relate the amount of catchment land use to downstream freshwater nutrients. Nor are existing models applicable to large numbers of freshwaters across broad spatial extents such as regions or con...
