Smoluchowski's Trapdoor
نویسنده
چکیده
A mechanism of a gated pore in a membrane is described. Fluxes of gas molecules pass through the pore and produce a pressure gradient in a process that challenges the second law.

An Experimental Investigation into the Arching Effect in Fine Sand
In the current paper results of a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect in loose and dense sand are presented. The apparatus comprises concentric circular trapdoors with different diameters that can yield downward while stresses and deformations are recorded simultaneously. As the trapdoor starts to yield, the whole soil mass deforms elastically. However, afte...
متن کاملFrictional Strain Hardening-softening in Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Arching Effect
In the current paper the results of a numerical simulation that were verified by a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect over a trapdoor in sand is presented. To simulate this phenomenon with continuum mechanics, the experimental procedure is modeled in ABAQUS code using stress dependent hardening in elastic state and plastic strain dependent frictional harden...
متن کاملA rigorous derivation of Smoluchowski ’ s equation in the moderate limit
Smoluchowski's equation is a macroscopic description of a many particle system with coagulation and shattering interactions. We give a microscopic model of the system from which we derive this equation rigorously. Provided the existence of a unique and sufficiently regular solution of Smoluchowski's equation, we prove the law of large numbers for the empirical processes. In contrast to previous...
متن کاملCoagulation and branching process models of gravitationalclusteringRavi
Smoluchowski's coagulation equation describes the growth of clustering in a system in which clusters coalesce irreversibly by binary mergers. If the rate with which two objects merge is proportional to the sum of their masses, and the process starts with all clusters having the same mass initially (monodisperse initial conditions), then the growth of clustering in the system can be derived from...
