چکیده

Context. We present 12.8 μm images of the core of NGC 1068, the archetype Seyfert type II galaxy, obtained during first operations of the BURST mode of the VLT/VISIR (Imager and Spectrometer in the InfraRed at the Very Large Telescope). Aims. We trace structures under the diffraction limit of one UT (Unit Telescope at the VLT) and we investigate the link between dust in the vicinity of the central engine of NGC 1068, recently resolved by interferometry with MIDI (Mid-InfrareD Interferometer), and more extended structures. This step is mandatory for a multi-scale understanding of the sources of mid-infrared emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Methods. A speckle processing of VISIR BURST mode images was performed to extract very low spatial-frequency visibilities, first considering the full field of VISIR BURST mode images and then limiting it to the mask used for the acquisition of MIDI data. Results. Extracted visibilities are reproduced with a multi-component model. We identify two major sources of emission at 12.8 μm: a compact one < 85 mas, directly associated with the dusty torus, and an elliptical one of size (< 140) mas × 1187 mas and P.A. ∼ -4 (from north to east), which gives a new description of the NS elongation of the nucleus. This is consistent with previous deconvolution processes. The combination with MIDI data reveals the close environment of the dusty torus to contribute to ∼ 83% of the MIR flux seen by MIDI. Conclusions. This strong contribution has to be considered in modeling long baseline interferometric data. It must be related to the NS elongated component which is thought to originate from individually unresolved dusty clouds and is located inside the ionization cone where it is photoevaporating and radiatively accelerated. Low temperatures of the dusty torus are not challenged, emphasizing the scenarios of clumpy

High-Spatial Resolution SED of NGC 1068 from Near-IR to Radio Disentangling the thermal and non-thermal contributions

We investigate the ideas that a sizable fraction of the interferometrically unresolved infrared emission of the nucleus of NGC 1068 might originate from other processes than thermal dust emission from the torus. We examine the contribution of free-free or synchrotron emissions to the central midand near-IR parsec-scale emitting region of NGC 1068. Each mechanism is constrained with parsec scale...

Continuum emission in NGC 1068 and NGC 3147 : Indications for a turnover in the core spectra ⋆

We present new interferometric observations of the continuum emission at mm wavelengths in the Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 3147. Three mm continuum peaks are detected in NGC 1068, one centered on the core, one associated with the jet and the third one with the counter-jet. This is the first significant detection of the radio jet and counter-jet at mm wavelengths in NGC 1068. While the flu...

The Molecular Gas in the Circumnuclear Region of Seyfert Galaxies1

Sub-arcsecond IRAM Plateau de Bure mm-interferometric observations of the CO (2-1) line emission in the Seyfert 1 NGC 3227 and the Seyfert 2 NGC 1068 have revealed complex kinematic systems in the inner 100 pc to 300 pc that are not consistent with pure circular motion in the host galaxies. Modeling of these kinematic systems with elliptical orbits in the plane of the host galaxy (representing ...

3D Radiative Transfer Modeling of Clumpy Dust Tori Around AGN

Abstract. We present 3-dimensional radiative transfer models for clumpy dust tori around AGN. Our method combines Monte Carlo simulations of individual dust clouds with the actual 3-dimensional distribution of clouds in the torus. The model has been applied to NIR and MIR photometric and interferometric observations of NGC 1068. For the first time, it is possible to simultaneously reproduce bot...

The environment of the fast rotating star Achernar High - resolution thermal infrared imaging with VISIR in BURST mode

Context. It is expected that Be stars are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes, and that a significant fraction have companions. Achernar (αEri) is the nearest Be star, and is thus a favourable target to search for their signatures using high resolution imaging. Aims. We aim at detecting circumstellar material or companions around Achernar at distances of a few tens of AU. Methods. We obtained...
