Conversations in BME
نویسنده
چکیده
W ith this issue of the magazine, we are adding a new feature, ‘‘Conversations in BME,’’ in which distinguished academics and researchers discuss a biomedical issue in depth, highlighting pros and cons of different approaches. Our goal for this feature is to promote discussion as a way to facilitate scientific growth in our community and, in particular, among students. It is a pleasure to introduce the guests for this issue: Prof. Jos e del R. Mill an, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, and Prof. Jose M. Carmena, University of California, Berkeley, who discuss how noninvasive and invasive cortical signals can be used to control robotic systems in a successful way and examine the potentials and limits of noninvasive and invasive cortical neural prostheses. Representing excellence in their respective fields, Dr. Mill an and Dr. Carmena here share thoughtful ideas for the future of brain– machine interface technology. —Silvestro Micera

Optimality of the neighbor joining algorithm and faces of the balanced minimum evolution polytope.
Balanced minimum evolution (BME) is a statistically consistent distance-based method to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree from an alignment of molecular data. In 2000, Pauplin showed that the BME method is equivalent to optimizing a linear functional over the BME polytope, the convex hull of the BME vectors obtained from Pauplin's formula applied to all binary trees. The BME method is related to ...

Coming out is a contentious issue, particularly for the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) populations. The following questions attempt to address the three large issues here: (i) Is coming out necessary in the first place? (ii) If yes, who does the BME-Queer (BME-Q) individual come out to, and (iii) where does he/she come out (in) to? The first question is related to the sexual identities that BM...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Little is known about the evolution of bone marrow edema (BME) in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCF) after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) or about its relation with relief of pain. In this study, we prospectively assessed changes in BME with MR imaging at 3, 6, and 12 months after PV and related changes in BME with pain evolution and analgesic use over t...
متن کاملA new biomedical engineering study program adopted at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of University of Ljubljana
In the last years, the field of biomedical engineering (BME) has been one of the fastest growing and developing engineering fields, world-wide. It also has an important and long-lasting tradition at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of University of Ljubljana in both research and education. During the recent process of renewal of the current study programs to comply with the Bologna declara...
متن کاملBone marrow edema - premonitory sign in malignant hemopathies or nonspecific change?
Bone marrow edema (BME) is defined as an excess of fluids that builds up in the bone marrow (BM), commonly found because of osteoporosis, trauma, infections, ischemia or neoplasia. Histologically, BME is characterized by accumulation of extracellular eosinophilic fluid. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the only method that highlights the presence of BME caused by various diseases, including ...
