Fabricating and Characterizing Polymers and Composites

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a polymer that is currently used in the medical field for sutures and bone pins. Because it is biodegradable, it has the potential to become even more widely used. The atomic structure and material characteristics of PLLA were analyzed. An extruder was used to fabricate the polymer into various thicknesses and shapes. Using a differential scanning calorimeter, the crystallization temperature was determined to be approximately 150 ̊C, which was then used in an annealing process for two hours before a two hour cooling. X-ray diffraction was then performed in order to determine the crystallinity of the samples. The sutures were tensile tested to determine physical properties from the stress/strain relationship curve. In all samples tested, the annealed fibers demonstrated superior physical characteristics. The overall data patterns showed that greater crystallinity dramatically improved not only the strength, but also the plasticity of the polymer. This confirms that optimization of PLLA through specific crystallinity is possible.
