Robust persistent activity in neural fields with asymmetric connectivity

چکیده
Modeling studies have shown that recurrent interactions within neural networks are capable of self-sustaining non-uniform activity profiles. These patterns are thought to be the neural basis of working memory. However, the lack of robustness challenge this view as already small deviations from the assumed interaction symmetry destroy the attractor state. Here we analyze attractor states of a neural field model composed of bistable neurons. We show the existence of self-stabilized patterns that robustly represent the cue position in the presence of a substantial asymmetry in the connection profile. Using approximation techniques we derive an explicit expression for a threshold value describing the transition to a traveling activity wave.

Coupling layers regularizes wave propagation in laminar stochastic neural fields
We study the effects of coupling between layers of stochastic neural field models with laminar structure. In particular, we focus on how the propagation of waves of neural activity in each layer is affected by the coupling. Synaptic connectivities within and between each layer are determined by integral kernels of an integrodifferential equation describing the temporal evolution of neural activ...

We explore how layered architectures influence the dynamics of stochastic neural field models. Our main focus is how the propagation of waves of neural activity in each layer is affected by interlaminar coupling. Synaptic connectivities within and between each layer are determined by integral kernels of an integrodifferential equation describing the temporal evolution of neural activity. Excita...
متن کاملSelf-organized critical neural networks.
A mechanism for self-organization of the degree of connectivity in model neural networks is studied. Network connectivity is regulated locally on the basis of an order parameter of the global dynamics, which is estimated from an observable at the single synapse level. This principle is studied in a two-dimensional neural network with randomly wired asymmetric weights. In this class of networks,...
متن کاملStimulation of the frontal eye field reveals persistent effective connectivity after controlled behavior.
Our ability to choose nonhabitual controlled behavior instead of habitual automatic behavior is based on a flexible control mechanism subserved by neural activity representing the behavior-guiding rule. However, it has been shown that the behavior slows down more when switching from controlled to automatic behavior than vice versa. Here we show that persistent effective connectivity of the neur...
متن کاملO6: Pathophysiology of Anxiety Disorders
The most important risk factors for anxiety disorders include genes, early life stress, and current stress. These factors do not act independently but interact with each other throughout human development through examples such as epigenetic modifications and complex forms of learning. The neural substrate of pathological anxiety includes hyperactivity in the amygdala and other limbic brain regi...
