چکیده

We present short Chandra observations of twelve bright (i<18) zem∼1.5 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey chosen to have significantly redder optical colors than most quasars at the same redshift. Of the five quasars with optical properties most consistent with dust reddening at the quasar redshift, four show indirect evidence of moderate X-ray absorption (inferred NH∼ 10 22 cm) with a dust-to-gas ratio <1% of the SMC value. The remaining seven objects show no evidence for even moderate intrinsic X-ray absorption. Thus, while optically red quasars are marginally more likely to show signatures of X-ray absorption than optically selected quasars with normal colors, dust-reddened type 1 AGN (as opposed to fully obscured type 2 AGN) are unlikely to contribute significantly to the remaining unresolved hard X-ray background. The red quasar population includes objects with intrinsically red continua as well as objects with dust-reddened continua. Improved sample selection is thus needed to increase our understanding of either subpopulation. To identify dust-reddened quasars likely to exhibit X-ray absorption, some measure of spectral curvature is preferable to simple cuts in observed or relative broad-band colors. Subject headings: quasars: general — X-rays: galaxies — quasars: absorption lines

Agn Physics with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Asp Conference Series, Vol. **volume***, 2004 X-rays from the Dawn of the Modern Universe. Chandra and Xmm-newton Observations of Z > 4 Quasars

Quasars at z > 4 provide direct information on the first massive structures to form in the Universe. Recent ground-based optical surveys (e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey) have discovered large numbers of high-redshift quasars, increasing the number of known quasars at z > 4 to ≈ 500. Most of these quasars are suitable for follow-up X-ray studies. Here we review X-ray studies of the highest r...

Chandra Observations of Three SDSS

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at redshift z ≈ 6 (Fan et al. 2001) are the most distant condensed objects known in the universe. X-ray observations of them are of great importance; e.g., to study the cosmic time evolution of X-ray emission and to assess the detectability of quasar X-ray emission at even larger redshifts. All three quasars were easily detected in X-rays even in thes...

The X-ray Properties of the Most-luminous Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Utilizing 21 new Chandra observations as well as archival Chandra, ROSAT, and XMM-Newton data, we study the X-ray properties of a representative sample of 59 of the most optically luminous quasars in the Universe (Mi ≈ −29.3 to −30.2) spanning a redshift range of z ≈ 1.5–4.5. Our full sample consists of 32 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3 (DR3) quasar catalog, two...

A Chandra Search for X-ray Jets in Redshift 6 Quasars

We have searched for X-ray jets in the recent Chandra observations of three Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at redshift z ≈ 6. All 3 quasars were detected in X-rays in these relatively short observations. SDSS1030+0524 is not consistent with a point source, and may be a gravitationally lensed system. We find a possible jet-like feature 23 from the quasar SDSS 1306+0356. We can explain t...

Are Optically-selected Quasars Universally X-ray Luminous? X-ray/uv Relations in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasars

We analyze archived Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of 536 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) quasars (QSOs) at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 2.7 in order to characterize the relative UV and X-ray spectral properties of QSOs that do not have broad UV absorption lines (BALs). We constrain the fraction of X-ray weak, non-BAL QSOs and find that such objects are rare; for example, sources u...
