چکیده

This paper considers the bonded joint as a multilayer structure that is analysed using the Transfer Matrix method. In this particular case three layers (two adherents and the adhesive) are considered. The study of this propagation problem may be developed from matrix formulations which describe elastic waves in layered media. This technique combines the theory of the dynamics of the continuum within each layer with the conditions for the interaction at the interfaces between layers. The behaviour of the different modes which propagates in the overlap region is obtained, and is found that the relative amplitudes can be estimated based on the properties of the incident wave mode. It was verified that the excitation of these modes is ruled by the degree to which their mode shapes match the mode shapes of the incident wave. This allows us to explain the physical phenomena that are behind the mode conversion, which could be used to a correct selection of modes for non-destructive evaluation of the bond region. Another result which must be emphasized consists is the possibility to determine by this method the attenuation of both longitudinal and transversal waves in plates what usually is a difficult by using conventional pulse-echo technique, especially in thin plates. Using an immersion pitch and catch setup, the total attenuation, that is composed by the losses due to the leaking in the fluid and material damping, can easily be obtained doing two measurements at different distances. The leaking losses can be obtained by knowing the bulk properties of both fluid and plate. So, attenuation of longitudinal and transversal waves (material damping) can be evaluated. In the experimental work two sets of lap joints built from 1mm and 4 mm thickness aluminium plates are tested using the fundamental S0 mode as incident wave. Very good agreement is found when compared with the theoretical predictions.

Wave Propagation and Dispersion of Lamb Waves in Adhesively-bonded Structures

With an increasing use of adhesively bonded joints in the industry, there is a correspondingly growing need for the inspection of adhered joints. It is necessary to detect defects in the adhesively bonded materials such as voids inclusions, chemical miscure of the adhesive, or delaminations of the bonded layers. In order to use an ultrasonic technique to detect these defects, a thorough underst...

Lamb Wave Interaction with Adhesively Bonded Stiffeners and Disbonds Using 3D Vibrometry

There are many advantages to adhesively bonding stiffeners onto aircraft structures rather than using traditional mechanical fastening methods. However there is a lack of confidence of the structural integrity of adhesively bonded joints over time. Acousto-ultrasonic Lamb waves have shown great potential in structural health monitoring applications in both metallic and composite structures. Thi...

Propagation of guided Lamb waves in bonded specimens using piezoelectric wafer active sensors

The nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of adhesively bonded structures is a complex process. Earlier work has confirmed that ultrasonic waves are influenced by the properties of the material in which they travel. Acousto-ultrasonic methods have been widely used by previous researchers to generate ultrasonic waves in plates and bonded structures for flaw detection, visualization, and measurements o...

Analytical Solution of Stress Field in Adhesively Bonded Composite Single-Lap Joints Under Mechanical Loadings

In this paper, considering an adhesively bonded composite single-lap joint, a novel approach is presented to predict the peel and shear stress distributions of the adhesive layer for an ASTM standard test sample. In current method, the equilibrium equations are derived using the energy method and based on the Timoshenko’s beam theory. Two solution procedures then are discussed, one of which rep...

Viscoelastic analysis of stress distribution in balanced and unbalanced adhesively bonded single-lap joints with functionally graded adherends under the Reddy model

In this study, shear and peel stress distributions in the viscoelastic adhesive layer of a single-lap joint (SLJ) with functionally graded (FG) adherends are investigated. The study focuses on the effect of different adherend profiles and material composition on the time-dependent stress concentration/distribution in balanced and unbalanced SLJs. For this purpose, the Reddy model is applied to ...
