Bagasse Storage in Cylindrical Silos
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper covers the principles and design aspects of cylindrical bins for the storage and reclaimation of bagasse. The system described (fig. 1) was originally designed and drawn up by the author in 1963 for the Mossman sugar mill. The design was not adopted, favour being given to the more conventional rectangular system with travelling suspended reclaimer. The first circular system, with a capacity of 800 tonnes, was constructed in 1970 to a general scheme proposed in conjunction with Kalamia mill at Ayr. In 1972 similar systems of 450 tonnes capacity at Haughton and 650 tonnes at Mulgrave were installed. The Kalamia system is described by Muir (1971). It is the intention in presenting this paper to invite discussion on the principles incorporated in the circular bin system and, hopefully, to improve any systems planned for the future.

Buckling of Stiffened Thin Walled Cylindrical Shells due to Global Shear
Thin walled cylindrical shells are important components of industrial structures such as liquid storage tanks, silos, etc. Shell buckling is usually a major failure mode of thin walled shells under extreme loads such as earthquakes. Longitudinal and radial stiffeners are generally used in order to increase buckling capacity of thin walled shells. During an earthquake, cylindrical shells may exp...
متن کاملAnalysis of Cylindrical Granular Material Silos under Seismic Excitation
Silos generally work as storage structures between supply and demand for various goods, and their structural safety has long been of interest to the civil engineering profession. This is especially true for dynamically loaded silos, e.g., in case of seismic excitation. Particularly thin-walled cylindrical silos are highly vulnerable to seismic induced pressures, which can cause critical bucklin...
متن کاملEffect of Storage System and Dry Matter Content on the Composition of Alfalfa Silage1
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of dry matter (DM) content and three different storage systems on the quality of alfalfa ensiled on commercial farms. Alfalfa silage samples were collected from 21 bunker silos, 20 silos that limited oxygen infiltration, and 19 tower silos on 43 commercial dairy farms. Storage system and DM content were confounded because silages from bu...

متن کاملRefereed Paper Challenges and Potential Solutions for Storage of Large Quantities of Bagasse for Power Generation Purchase Bs, Rosettenstein S and Bezuidenhoudt Dv
Prolonged storage of large quantities of bagasse for off-season power generation presents challenges different from those associated with small-scale storage or large-scale, wet storage for pulp and paper production. The challenges include loss of fuel value, spontaneous combustion, bagasse handling and a variety of health and environmental impacts. Experiences with these challenges in Australi...
