Neurology and the blood: haematological abnormalities in ischaemic stroke.

چکیده
Haematological disorders account for up to 8% of all ischaemic strokes in diVerent series. Table 1 shows the haematological disorders associated with ischaemic stroke. Most studies report them as being more common in younger stroke patients, particularly those who have undetermined stroke aetiology after extensive tests including full cardiac evaluation. Many primary haematological disorders have been associated with ischaemic stroke but in many patients with stroke other aetiological factors are also present making a cause and eVect relation diYcult to prove. Furthermore, some of these haematological factors, particularly deficiencies of natural anticoagulants, are more potent causes of venous thrombosis. Therefore in such cases paradoxical embolism from the venous system should be considered, and excluded, before arterial thrombosis is implicated.

Red blood cell distribution width and ischaemic stroke
The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of red blood cell (RBC) size heterogeneity, which is easily calculated by dividing the SD of erythrocyte volumes for the mean corpuscular volume. Recent reporter suggested that, besides haematological diseases and anaemia, many human disorders may be closely associated with the elevated RDW. A literature review has revealed the RDW may be...
متن کاملRetinal microvascular abnormalities and stroke: a systematic review.
BACKGROUND Lacunar strokes account for 25% of ischaemic strokes, but their precise aetiology is unknown. Similarities between the retinal and cerebral small vessels mean that clarification of the exact relationship between retinal microvascular abnormalities and stroke, and particularly with stroke subtypes, may aid understanding of the aetiology of lacunar stroke and stroke risk. METHODS A s...
متن کاملAcute symptomatic hypoglycaemia mimicking ischaemic stroke on imaging: a systemic review
BACKGROUND Acute symptomatic hypoglycaemia is a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with stroke-like neurological impairment, but few textbooks describe the full brain imaging appearances. We systematically reviewed the literature to identify how often hypoglycaemia may mimic ischaemic stroke on imaging, common patterns and relationships with hypoglycaemia severity, duration, clinical...
متن کاملEpidemiologic Study of the Main Risk Factors for one Year Ischemic Stroke and Surivial in Patients Admitted to the Neurology Department of Ghayim Hospital in Mashhad, Iran, 2015
Introduction: Stroke is the third most common cause of death in developed countries and is the most common neurological disabling disease. Today, several risk factors are known for stroke including lifestyle and risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes which differ in cultures and countries. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of ischemic stroke in patients admitted to th...
متن کاملThe Findings of Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography in Patients with Ischemic Stroke
Background: Stroke is a multifactorial disorder, the most common cause being arterial occlusion. Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD) is a common non-invasive method available for assessment the arterial blood flow of the brain. Objective: Assessment the hemodynamic parameters of cerebral arteries, using TCD device in patients suffering ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: This descr...
