Iapr Technical Paper Series Stereotypes in Intertemporal Choice

چکیده
Physicians’ recommendations often require prediction of patients’ intertemporal preferences. Towards the end of understanding the character of these predictions, we conduct laboratory experiments exploring the existence of stereotypes in intertemporal decision-making. Participants were asked to predict intertemporal decisions made by third parties described only by age and gender. We find evidence of significant age and gender stereotyping with respect to intertemporal preferences. Interestingly, gender stereotyping is asymmetric across gender of respondent, with members of each gender viewing themselves as more patient than members of the other gender. We discuss these results in light of evidence of asymmetries in how physicians provide recommendations based on a patient’s demographic characteristics.

Iapr Technical Paper Series Paretian Dictators: Constraining Choice in a Voluntary Contribution Game
We explore individuals’ preferences over limiting the choice sets of themselves and others. Specifically, we conduct public goods games in which participants can mandate the contributions of others or restrict choices to a subset of feasible contributions levels. We find that, relative to a baseline treatment in which individuals make choices from the set of all contribution alternatives, allow...

Research in psychology indicates that individuals often make inferences regarding unknown individual qualities based on potentially irrelevant (but socially observable) information. This paper explores occupational choices when individuals receive imprecise signals regarding ability and use the observable characteristics of previously successful individuals to infer own ability. Individuals who...
متن کاملNo Effects of Psychosocial Stress on Intertemporal Choice
Intertemporal choices - involving decisions which trade off instant and delayed outcomes - are often made under stress. It remains unknown, however, whether and how stress affects intertemporal choice. We subjected 142 healthy male subjects to a laboratory stress or control protocol, and asked them to make a series of intertemporal choices either directly after stress, or 20 minutes later (resu...
متن کاملTheoretical frameworks for neuroeconomics of intertemporal choice
Intertemporal choice has drawn attention in behavioral economics, econophysics, and neuroeconomics. Recent studies in mainstream economics have mainly focused on inconsistency in intertemporal choice (dynamic inconsistency); while impulsivity/impatience in intertemporal choice has been extensively studied in behavioral economics of addiction. However, recent advances in neuroeconomic and econop...
متن کاملIntangibility in intertemporal choice.
Since the advent of the discounted utility (DU) model, economists have thought about intertemporal choice in very specific terms. DU assumes that people make explicit trade-offs between costs and benefits occurring at different points in time. While this explicit trade-off perspective is simple and tractable, and has stimulated productive research, it does not provide a very realistic represent...
