Oscillation of fluid‐filled cracks triggered by degassing of CO2 due to leakage along wellbores

چکیده
[1] We present evidence for a seismic source associated with degassing CO2 during leakage along two wellbores instrumented with arrays of downhole seismometers. More than 200 microseismic events were detected in direct vicinity of the monitoring wells. The observed seismic waves are dominantly P waves and tube waves, with no (or extremely weak S) shear waves. The waveforms of these events indicate extremely rapid amplitude decays with distance across the arrays, consistent with the seismometers being in the near field of the seismic source. The frequency characteristics, first‐motion polarities and S to P amplitude ratios suggest a single force source mechanism. Because the seismic arrays were located at the depth where the density of ascending CO2 changes most rapidly, it appears that the transition of CO2 from supercritical fluid to gas triggers an oscillation of fluid‐filled cavities and fractures very close to the wellbores in which the monitoring arrays were deployed. In many aspects, the observed waveforms show a striking similarity to those modeled for degassing processes below volcanoes. We suggest that the single force represents bubble growth and resulting oscillations in cement cavities between the steel casing of the well and the rock adjacent to the wellbores and/or within fractures in the rock just outside the wellbores.

Seismic detection of CO2 leakage along monitoring wellbores
A pilot carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration experiment was carried out in the Michigan Basin in which 10,000 tonnes of supercritical CO2was injected into the Bass Island Dolomite (BILD) at 1050 mdepth. A passive seismic monitoring (PSM) network was operated before, during and after the 17-day injection period. The seismic monitoring network consisted of two arrays of eight, three-component senso...

متن کاملA unified variational eigen-erosion framework for interacting brittle fractures and compaction bands in fluid-infiltrating porous media
The onset and propagation of the cracks and compaction bands, and the interactions between them in the host matrix, are important for numerous engineering applications, such as hydraulic fracture and CO2 storage. While crack may become flow conduit that leads to leakage, formation of compaction band often accompanies significant porosity reduction that prevents fluid to flow through. The object...
متن کاملPULSATILE MOTION OF BLOOD IN A CIRCULAR TUBE OF VARYING CROSS-SECTION WITH SLIP FLOW
Pulsatile motion of blood in a circular tube of varying cross-section has been developed by considering slip flow at the tube wall and the blood to be a non- Newtonian biviscous incompressible fluid. The tube wall is supposed to be permeable and the fluid exchange across the wall is accounted for by prescribing the normal velocity of the fluid at the tube wall. The tangential velocity of the fl...

Both offshore oil-gas exploration and marine methane hydrate recovery can trigger massive CH4 release from seafloor. During upward transportation of CH4 plume through water column, CH4 is subjected to dissolution and microbial consumption despite the protection of hydrate and oil coating on bubbles surface. The ultimate CH4 degassing to the atmosphere appears to be water-depth dependent. In sha...
