چکیده

For the first time, the abundances of a large sample of subgiant and turn-off region stars in ω Centauri have been measured, the data base being medium resolution spectroscopy from FORS2 at the VLT. Absolute iron abundances were derived for ∼400 member stars from newly defined line indices with an accuracy of ±0.15 dex. The abundances range between −2.2 <[Fe/H]< −0.7 dex, resembling the large metallicity spread found for red giant branch stars. The combination of the spectroscopic results with the location of the stars in the colour magnitude diagram has been used to estimate ages for the individual stars. Whereas most of the metal-poor stars are consistent with a single old stellar population, stars with abundances higher than [Fe/H]≃ −1.3 dex are younger. The total age spread in ω Cent is about 3 Gyr. The monotonically increasing age-metallicity relation seems to level off above [Fe/H]≃ −1.0 dex. Whether the star formation in ω Cen occured continuously or rather episodically has to be shown by combining more accurate abundances with highest quality photometry.

Abundance ratios relative to iron for carbon, nitrogen, strontium and barium are presented for a metal-rich main sequence star ([Fe/H]=–0.74) in the globular cluster ω Centauri. This star, designated 2015448, shows depleted carbon and solar nitrogen, but more interestingly, shows an enhanced abundance ratio of strontium [Sr/Fe]≈1.6 dex, while the barium abundance ratio is [Ba/Fe]≤0.6 dex. At th...

On the formation and evolution of the globular cluster ω Centauri

By means of N-body/hydrodynamical simulations we model the evolution of a primordial 108M density peak which ends up in an object closely resembling the present day globular cluster ω Centauri. We succeed to reproduce the main features of the cluster, namely the structure, kinematics and metallicity distribution. We suggest that ω Centauri might be a cosmological dwarf elliptical, formed at hig...

The enrichment history of ω Centauri: what we can learn from Strömgren photometry

In this contribution, results from CCD vby Strömgren photometry of a statistically complete sample of red giants and stars in the main sequence turn-off region in ω Centauri are presented. From the location of stars in the (b−y),m1 diagram metallicities have been determined. We argue that the Strömgren metallicity in terms of element abundances has another meaning than in other globular cluster...

Stellar populations in ω Centauri: a multivariate analysis

We have performed multivariate statistical analyses of photometric and chemical abundance parameters of three large samples of stars in the globular cluster ω Centauri. The statistical analysis of a sample of 735 stars based on seven chemical abundances with the method of Maximum Parsimony (cladistics) yields the most promising results: seven groups are found, distributed along three branches w...

Discovery of an Accreted Stellar System within the Globular Cluster Ω Cen

Recent wide-field photometric surveys (Lee et al.; Pancino et al.) have shown the existence of a previously unknown metal-rich ([F e/H] ≃ −0.6) stellar population in the galactic globular cluster ω Centauri. The discovery of this new component, which comprises only a small percentage (∼ 5%) of the entire cluster population, has added a new piece to the already puzzling picture of the star forma...
