Optical Aberrations Caused by Coherent Structures in a Subsonic, Compressible, Turbulent Boundary Layer

چکیده

by Jacob Allen Cress The relationship between optical aberrations and coherent structures in the turbulent boundary layer is investigated in a series of experiments. A statistical model is derived using the “extended” Strong Reynolds Analogy that allows the total temperature to vary and also presumes pressure fluctuations in the boundary layer are negligible compared to temperature fluctuations. This model is compared to experimental results taken of a moderately heated and cooled boundary layer. The effect of elevation angle on the amount of optical aberration is also investigated and discussed in relation to coherent structures. Two-dimensional wavefronts through a single boundary layer are presented along with average correlation length results. The distribution in time of the optical aberrations is analyzed and considered in terms of communication applications. This work concludes with a discussion of coherent vortical structures and how they are related to optical aberrations, and the relative contribution of pressure and temperature fluctuations to wavefront distortions.

Aero-Optical Measurements in a Heated, Subsonic, Turbulent Boundary Layer

A scaling relationship for OPDrms that accounts for the fluctuating total temperature profile within a turbulent boundary is derived from the modified Crocco relation. Experimental data from heated, compressible boundary layers at six subsonic Mach numbers in two wind tunnel facilities are shown to be consistent with the theory. The results show that a temperature mismatch between the freestrea...

Aero-optical Predictions of High-reynolnds Number Flows Using Wall-modeled Large-eddy Simulation

by Mohammed S. Kamel Reliable prediction of optical wavefront distortions induced by compressible turbulent flow surrounding an aperture is crucial to the development of airborne laser systems. Large-eddy simulation (LES) with a wall model provides a promising highfidelity simulation method for high-Reynolds-number aero-optical flows by avoiding the severe near-wall resolution requirement. In t...

Aero-optical measurements in a subsonic, turbulent boundary layer with non-adiabatic walls

This paper presents experimental studies of aero-optical distortions due to a turbulent boundary layer over a range of subsonic speeds with the underlying wall both heated above and cooled below the adiabatic wall temperature. A statistical scaling model, based on Extended Strong Reynolds Analogy is derived and shown to correctly predict experimentally-observed results. The temperature mismatch...
