A New Eigenvector Technique for Multivariate Direct Gradient Analysis 1

چکیده

A new multivariate analysis technique, developed to relate community composition to known variation in the environment, is described. The technique is an extension of correspondence analysis (reciprocal averaging), a popular ordination technique that extracts continuous axes of vari? ation from species occurrence or abundance data. Such ordination axes are typically interpreted with the help of external knowledge and data on environmental variables; this two-step approach (ordination followed by environmental gradient identification) is termed indirect gradient analysis. In the new technique, called canonical correspondence analysis, ordination axes are chosen in the light of known environmental variables by imposing the extra restriction that the axes be linear combinations of environmental variables. In this way community variation can be directly related to environmental variation. The environmental variables may be quantitative or nominal. As many axes can be extracted as there are environmental variables. The method of detrending can be incorporated in the technique to remove arch effects. (Detrended) canonical correspondence analysis is an efficient ordination technique when species have bell-shaped response curves or surfaces with respect to environmental gradients, and is therefore more appropriate for analyzing data on community composition and environmental variables than canonical correlation analysis. The new technique leads to an ordination diagram in which points represent species and sites, and vectors represent environmental variables. Such a diagram shows the patterns of variation in community composition that can be explained best by the environmental variables and also visualizes approximately the "centers" of the species distributions along each of the environmental variables. Such diagrams effectively summarized relationships between community and environment for data sets on hunting spiders, dyke vegetation, and algae along a pollution gradient.

Eigenvector of gravity gradient tensor for estimating fault dips considering fault type

The dips of boundaries in faults and caldera walls play an important role in understanding their formation mechanisms. The fault dip is a particularly important parameter in numerical simulations for hazard map creation as the fault dip affects estimations of the area of disaster occurrence. In this study, I introduce a technique for estimating the fault dip using the eigenvector of the observe...

Location and dimensionality estimation of geological bodies using eigenvectors of "Computed Gravity Gradient Tensor"

One of the methodologies employed in gravimetry exploration is eigenvector analysis of Gravity Gradient Tensor (GGT) which yields a solution including an estimation of a causative body’s Center of Mass (COM), dimensionality and strike direction. The eigenvectors of GGT give very rewarding clues about COM and strike direction. Additionally, the relationships between its components provide a quan...

An iterative procedure is presented for computing eigenvector sensitivities due to finite element model parameter variations. The present method is a Preconditioned Conjugate Projected Gradient-based technique and is intended to utilize the existing matrix factorizations developed for an iterative eigensolution such as Lanczos or Subspace Iteration. As such, this technique can be integrated int...

Faster Eigenvector Computation via Shift-and-Invert Preconditioning

We give faster algorithms and improved sample complexities for the fundamental problem of estimating the top eigenvector. Given an explicit matrix A ∈ Rn×d, we show how to compute an approximate top eigenvector of A>A in time Õ ([ nnz(A) + d sr(A) gap2 ] · log 1/ ) . Here nnz(A) is the number of nonzeros in A, sr(A) is the stable rank, and gap is the relative eigengap. We also consider an onlin...

The Alignment of Rods and Disks in Turbulence

We study the orientation and rotational dynamics of anisotropic particles in homogenous isotropic turbulence. By analyzing direct numerical simulation (DNS) data at Taylor-microscale Reynolds number of Rλ = 180, we quantify the preferential alignment between particle orientations and vorticity, as well as alignment with principal stretching directions defined by the Cauchy-Green strain tensor. ...
