چکیده

Concentrations of gaseous mercury (2.1 9.6 μg m−3) were measured within the former chlor-alkali plant in Kaštela Bay. This is a hazardous source of pollution and could present a serious problem for the town of Split and Jadro River. The aim of the work was to find the direction in which Hg-pollution was distributed. Soil samples were collected and total Hg concentrations were measured in soils and in sediments of Jadro River. Hg was transported in NW direction from pollution source and did not affect the source of Jadro River.

Assessment of low-level metal contamination using the Mediterranean mussel gills as the indicator tissue.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the level of metal contamination in two bays in the middle part of the Eastern Adriatic coastal zone in Croatia using the gills of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis as indicator tissue. Despite the existing sources of contamination, previous studies with caged mussels only indicated moderate metal contamination of the Kastela Bay, contrary to the Tro...

Mercury in aquatic sediments and soils from Croatia.

Mercury is one of the most toxic and hazardous pollutant which occurs in the environment in different chemical forms, of which methylmercury is the most dangerous. Recently it was recognised that long-term anthropogenic inputs of mercury into environment resulted in the global mercury pollution and it was concluded that action should be taken to quantify the pollution sources and reduce human-g...

Mercury and Radionuclides in Sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (Croatia) – Evaluation of the Sediment Pollution History*

Mercury and radionuclides (natural U and its decay series products and artificial 137Cs) were measured in sediments of the Ka{tela Bay (eastern Adriatic coast) in the vicinity of a former chloralkali plant. The depth distributions of radionuclides and mercury revealed that sediments in front of the factory represent a mixture of natural sediment and coal ash originating from the coal used in th...

Metal contamination recorded in the sediment of the semi-closed Bakar Bay (Croatia).

This study presents metal levels in the sediments of the Bakar Bay, with its main goal to evaluate recent anthropogenic influence, as well as over previous decades. Sediment profiles at 7 sampling points were taken. Chemical contents in bulk sediment were obtained using ICP, ICP-MS, and AAS methodologies, and 20 most significant elements were presented. Concentrations of selected elements were ...
