چکیده

The influence of leaf-wetness duration and temperature on infection of Amelanchier alnifolia (saskatoon) by Entomosporium mespili was quantified in controlled-environment studies. Plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension and then subjected to a period of leaf wetness (0, 6, 12, and 24 h), after which they were moved to a growth room set at a fixed temperature (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30°C) for a period of 14 d. Infection levels rose as the leaf-wetness duration increased for combined temperature treatments up to 24 h. Temperatures between 10 and 20°C promoted optimal leaf infection for leaf-wetness periods longer than 6 h. Above the optimal temperature range, mean disease levels decreased. ANOVA with orthogonal contrasts and stepwise regression were used to create a regression equation that describes the relationship of E. mespili infection on saskatoon to both temperature and leaf-wetness duration. Combinations of temperatures between 10 and 25°C and leaf-wetness periods between 6 and 24 h were optimal for lesion development on younger saskatoon leaves.

Epidemiology / Épidémiologie The development of a dynamic disease- forecasting model to control Entomosporium mespili on Amelanchier alnifolia

Entomosporium leaf and berry spot, which is caused by the fungal pathogen Entomosporium mespili, can cause up to 100% yield loss in Amelanchier alnifolia (saskatoon) in years when weather conditions are conducive to disease development. In an effort to optimize the effectiveness and minimize the use of fungicides, a dynamic diseaseforecasting model was developed. The model uses a disease pressu...

Epidemiology / Épidémiologie Estimating inoculum production relative to percent leaf area infected and environmental conditions required for stimulating release of Entomosporium mespili conidia on Amelanchier alnifolia

Amelanchier alnifolia, commonly known as saskatoon, is a fruit-bearing shrub native to the Canadian Prairies. Currently, production is limited by the fungal pathogen Entomosporium mespili. It was found that there is a positive linear relationship between the relative concentration of E. mespili conidia (X) and the percent of saskatoon leaf area that is infected (Y), as represented by the equati...

Effects of leaf wetness duration and temperature on infection of Prunus by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni

Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni is the causal agent of bacterial spot disease of stone fruits and almond. The bacterium is distributed throughout the major stone-fruit-producing areas of the World and is considered a quarantine organism in the European Union according to the Council Directive 2000/29/EC, and by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization. The effect of leaf we...

Effects of Temperature and Wetness Duration on Infection of Peanut Cultivars by Cercospora arachidicola.

ABSTRACT The effects of temperature and duration of wetness (relative humidity >/=95%) on infection of three peanut cultivars by Cercospora arachidicola were determined under controlled conditions. Plants of the Spanish cv. Spanco and the runner cvs. Florunner and Okrun were exposed to constant temperatures of 18 to 30 degrees C during 12-h periods of wetness each day that totaled 12 to 84 h fo...

Simulation of surface wetness with a water budget and energy balance approach

Surface wetness plays an important role in environmental studies. In particular, it is a major variable for plant disease prediction. Surface wetness is commonly measured with electronic sensors but simulation with a surface wetness model is an alternative. Recently, the increased use of interpolation procedures and atmospheric models to produce site-specific weather products has created a grea...
