"September 11, the war in Iraq and the near collapse of the Middle East peace process are witness to this great turmoil," Mubarak said. "Nevertheless, I am h e r e to talk to you about a hopeful vision that a ims to t ransform both the reality and the perception around the Middle East." Mubarak said his first pillar was an end to conflict in the region. He said creat ing separate s tates for Palestinians and Israelis is the only suitable solution, and that the violence in the region mus t c o m e to an end. 'Today , Palest inians and Israelis need to s tep back f rom the dange rous cycle of violence," Mubarak said. "They mus t recognize each o ther ' s r ight to f reedom. Suffering and the illegal and misguided assassinat ions do not serve the purpose of peace." Mubarak said despite the turmoil in nations su r round ing Egypt, domest ic priorities have not been ignored. He described his second pillar as a complete reformation of his country 's way of life. "We are taking gradual but determined steps towards the complete transformation of Egyptian society, economically, politically and socially," Mubarak said.
