A Shift in Louisiana Salt Marsh Microbial Communities Reflecting Changes in Salinity and Biogeochemical Parameters

چکیده
The relationship between microbial communities, salinity, soil depth, and time was evaluated using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) collected from coastal wetlands in Louisiana post hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The three marsh types studied included freshwater and intermediate marshes from the Jean Lafitte Preserve as well as two brackish marsh sites from the Caernarvon Basin. The Caernarvon Basin was heavily impacted from the hurricanes leaving the lower sites sampled remnant marsh. The goal of this study was to examine microbial community changes along a salinity gradient to further understand the impact of salinity on the wetland ecosystem. This was done using multivariate comparison analysis (CCA) in combination with descriptive analysis comparing water chemistry (pH, DOC, TDN, NO 2-, NO 3-, Cl-, and SO 4 3-) to PLFA data. This study finds a noticeable impact of salinity on PLFA as seen in an increased ratio of saturated to unsaturated PLFA as well as an increase the amount of cyclopropane PLFA in areas with a higher chloride content. The lower Caernarvon sites through exposure to the Caernarvon freshwater diversion and the recent hurricanes had salinity levels much closer to the intermediate marsh and proved to be an outlier on all findings. These findings mean that the microbial community is dynamic changing with season, depth, and salinity.

Nutrient enrichment induces dormancy and decreases diversity of active bacteria in salt marsh sediments
Microorganisms control key biogeochemical pathways, thus changes in microbial diversity, community structure and activity can affect ecosystem response to environmental drivers. Understanding factors that control the proportion of active microbes in the environment and how they vary when perturbed is critical to anticipating ecosystem response to global change. Increasing supplies of anthropoge...
متن کاملSpartina Species Zonation along the Altamaha River Estuary
Changes in freshwater inflow can cause changes in the distribution and diversity of marsh vegetation in estuarine habitats. In the fall of 2002 bankside vegetation was surveyed along the 24 km length of the Altamaha River estuary (n= 14 sites). Sites were quantified for multiple plant and edaphic parameters, including plant density, height, and tiller diameter. In this paper we present the char...
متن کاملNitrogen further promotes a dominant salt marsh plant in an increasingly saline environment
Aims Human alterations of the environment are combining in unprecedented ways, making predictions of alterations to natural communities a difficult and pressing challenge. Estuarine systems have been subject to a high degree of modification, including increased nitrogen (N) inputs and altered salinity, factors important in shaping estuarine plant communities. As human populations increase and t...

Denitrifying microbial communities and denitrification in salt marsh sediments may be affected by many factors, including environmental conditions, nutrient availability, and levels of pollutants. The objective of this study was to examine how microbial community composition and denitrification enzyme activities (DEA) at a California salt marsh with high nutrient loading vary with such factors....

Atmospheric warming and increased nitrogen deposition can lead to changes of microbial communities with possible consequences for biogeochemical processes. We used an enclosure facility in a freshwater marsh to assess the effects on microbes associated with decomposing plant litter under conditions of simulated climate warming and pulsed nitrogen supply. Standard batches of litter were placed i...
