Boric Acid and Borates
نویسنده
چکیده
Boric acid and its chemical relatives are pesticides that are derived from the element boron. Boron rarely occurs alone and is typically found in combination with other elements; common combinations are boric acid or borates.1 Unlike many pesticides which are synthetic compounds,2 boric acid and related pesticides are naturally occurring compounds.1 Boron compounds are widely found in rivers, streams, oceans, groundwater, and soil.3,4 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls them “ubiquitous in the environment.”3 Boron is also an essential nutrient for plants,3 and is therefore found in many of the foods we eat.4 Researchers estimate that people consume between 10 and 25 milligrams of boron BORIC ACID AND BORATES

Complexation of Nickel Ions by Boric Acid or (Poly)borates
An experiment based on electrochemical reactions and pH monitoring was performed in which nickel ions were gradually formed by oxidation of a nickel metal electrode in a solution of boric acid. Based on the experimental results and aqueous speciation modeling, the evolution of pH showed the existence of significant nickel-boron complexation. A triborate nickel complex was postulated at high bor...
متن کاملThe Conversion Kinetics of Tincal to Boric Acid in Nitric Acid Solutions
Pure borax and various boron compounds are produced from the solutions in which tincal is dissolved with various reagents. Economically important boron compounds such as boric acid, borax, boric oxide, and refined hydrated sodium borates and perborates are produced from boron-containing ores. The production of boric acid by using nitric acid from tincal is more advantageous because it evalu...

2. Relevance to Public Health 2.1 Background and Environmental Exposures to Boron in the United States
Boron is a widely occurring element in minerals found in the earth’s crust. It is the 51 most common element found in the earth’s crust and is found at an average concentration of 8 mg/kg (approximately 0.0008%). It is found in the environment primarily combined with oxygen in compounds called borates. Common borate compounds include boric acid, salts of boric acid (e.g., sodium tetraborates, w...
متن کاملEnvironmentally Friendly Wood Preservative System Based on Polymerized Tannin Resin-boric Acid for Outdoor Applications♣
Boron compounds are used as wood preservatives as they are both fungicide and insecticide, relatively inexpensive and environmentally acceptable. Nevertheless, in the field of wood protection, borates are only used for indoor non-exposed applications or in association with other biocides, due to their main disadvantage of being readily leachable from treated wood. To overcome this problem, bori...
