Lithospheric architecture at the Rae-Hearne boundary revealed through magnetotelluric and seismic experiments

چکیده
The western segment of the Churchill Province of Canada, west of Hudson Bay, was divided by Hoffman (1988) into the Archean Rae and Hearne domains separated by the Snowbird Tectonic Zone (STZ) (Fig. 1), defined on the basis of potential field data. The Hearne domain has been further subdivided into the northern Hearne and southern Hearne subdomains (Davis et al., this volume). There is little dispute about the exposed southernmost NE-SW segment of the STZ, from south of Baker Lake through the Athabasca basin and cotinuing beneath the sedimentary cover of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. However, its projection east of Baker Lake along Chesterfield Inlet is highly speculative and debatable.

Steps in lithospheric thickness within eastern Australia, evidence from surface wave tomography
[1] A series of steps in the lithospheric thickness of eastern Australia are revealed by the latest seismic surface wave tomographic model and calculations of the horizontal gradient of shear wave speed. The new images incorporate data from the recent Tasmal experiment, improving resolution in continental Australia. Through comparisons with surface geology and geochemical studies, it is possibl...
متن کاملTeleseismic imaging of the Slave craton and implications for the assembly of cratonic lithosphere
In this dissertation, I investigate the assembly and evolution of the Archean cratonic lithosphere by using two complementary seismological methods to image the lithospheric structure of the Slave craton in Canada. First, I perform surface wave tomographic inversions to constrain the depth dependence of Rayleigh wave phase velocity, shear wave velocity, and azimuthal anisotropy of the Slave cra...

متن کاملStructural imaging in the Rocky Mountain Foothills (Alberta) using magnetotelluric exploration
The magnetotelluric method has improved significantly in recent years and is being used in hydrocarbon exploration in regions where seismic exploration is difficult. This includes areas where highvelocity carbonates and volcanic rocks are present in the near surface, overthrust belts, and in subsalt imaging. Magnetotelluric exploration was used in the Rocky Mountain Foothills in 2002 to determi...

Long records of teleseismic observations accumulated at permanent seismic stations Harvard, MA; Palisades, NY; and Standing Stone, PA, in eastern North America are inverted for vertical distribution of anisotropic parameters. High-resolution anisotropy-aware P wave receiver function analysis and multiple-layer core-refracted SKS waveform modeling favor more than one layer of anisotropy beneath ...
