چکیده

Space–time adaptive processing (STAP) for airborne early warning radar has been a very active area of research since the late 1980’s. An airborne rectangular planar array antenna is usually configured into subarrays and then partial adaptive processing is applied to the outputs of these subarrays. In practice, three kinds of errors are often encountered, i.e., the array gain and phase errors existing in each element, the channel gain and phase errors, and the clutter covariance matrix estimation errors due to insufficient secondary data samples. These errors not only degrade the clutter suppression performance, but also cause the adapted array patterns to suffer much distortion (high sidelobes and distorted mainbeams), which may result in the rise of falsealarm probability and make the adaptive monopulse tracking and sidelobe blankering more difficult. In this paper, the causes of the above three kinds of errors to array pattern distortion are discussed and a novel quadratic soft constraint factored approach is proposed to precisely control the peak sidelobe level of adapted patterns. The soft constraint factor can be determined explicitly according to the peak sidelobe level desired and the known or desired tolerant error standard deviations. Numerical results obtained by using high-fidelity simulated airborne radar clutter data are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach. Although the method is presented for STAP, it can be directly applied to the conventional adaptive beamforming for rectangular planar arrays used to suppress jammers.

Reduced Rank Space-time Adaptive Processing with Quadratic Pattern Constraints for Airborne Radar

Reduced rank (RR) linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) adaptive beamforming with quadratic pattern constraints (QPC) is applied to space-time adaptive processing (STAP) for airborne radar. The problem is formulated for general rank reducing transformations and main beam and sidelobe pattern control is achieved by imposing a set of inequality constraints on the mean-square error between ...

Constrained Fast-time STAP Techniques for Interference Suppression in Multichannel SAR

Forming a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image while suppressing an airborne broadband jammer can potentially destroy large regions of the image. In addition to this, multipath reflections from the ground, known as hotclutter (HC) or terrain scattered interference will add a nonstationary interference component to the image. Using multiple antennas on a SAR provides spatial degrees of freedom a...

Phased Array Radar Data Processing Using Adaptive Displaced Phase Centre Antenna Principle

Employing the autoregressive (AR) technique and the principle of displaced phase centre antenna (DPCA) we construct an optimum adaptive DPCA processor for moving target detection from airborne phased arrary radar data collected under nonDPCA conditions. It is fundamentally different from the existing adaptive DPCA which is not optimum. The number of range samples it needs to estimate its parame...

Approximate Invariance of the Inverse of the Covariance Matrix and the Resultant Pre-built STAP Processor

Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) has been proven to be optimum in scenarios where an airborne phased-array radar is used to search for moving targets. The STAP requires the inverse of the covariance matrix (ICM) of undesired signals. The computation of the real-time ICM is impractical at current computer speeds. Proposing two Theorems, this report indicates that the ICM is approximately in...

Fast Iterative Subspace Algorithms for Airborne STAP Radar

Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) is a crucial technique for the new generation airborne radar for Doppler spread compensation caused by the platform motion. We here propose to apply range cell snapshots-based recursive algorithms in order to reduce the computational complexity of the conventional STAP algorithms and to deal with a possible nonhomogeneity of the data samples. Subspace track...
