The use of formalin to kill Histoplasma capsulatum at an epidemic site.

چکیده
Early attempts to eliminate Histoplasma capsulatum from known positive sites were either unsuccessful or rendered the soil unfit for growth of vegetation (1, 2). Recently, formaldehyde solution (formalin) and cresol compound have been shown to be effective decontamination agents in the laboratory and in field experiments under natural conditions (3). The promising results with formaldehyde solution led to its large-scale field trial to decontaminate a 5-acre site in Mason City, Iowa, which had been the source of 2 epidemics of histoplasmosis (4, 5). The present paper describes the methods used and the results of the decontamination project.

متن کاملRespiration in the yeast and mycelial phases of Histoplasma capsulatum.
Respiration in the yeast and mycelial phases of Histoplasma capsulatum proceeds via a cytochrome system and an alternate oxidase, both present constitutively. The mycelial cytochrome system is distinguished by an additional partial shunt around the antimycin-sensitive site.
متن کاملHuman dendritic cell activity against Histoplasma capsulatum is mediated via phagolysosomal fusion.
Histoplasma capsulatum is a fungal pathogen that requires the induction of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) for host survival. We have demonstrated that human dendritic cells (DC) phagocytose H. capsulatum yeasts and, unlike human macrophages (Mø) that are permissive for intracellular growth, DC killed and degraded the fungus. In the present study, we sought to determine whether the mechanism(s) by...

Northey, W. T. (Arizona State University, Tempe) and L. D. Brooks. In vitro conversion of Histoplasma capsulatum. J. Bacteriol. 84:577-580. 1962.-The in vitro fungus-yeast conversion of the diphasic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum, has been accomplished using enzymatic digests of casein. Of these casein digests, the most rapid and complete conversion was found when Ferm-Amine Types I, II, and II...
متن کاملHistoplasma capsulatum modulates the acidification of phagolysosomes
The phagolysosome is perhaps the most effective antimicrobial site within macrophages due both to its acidity and to its variety of hydrolytic enzymes. Few species of pathogens survive and multiply in these vesicles. However, one strategy for microbial survival would be to induce a higher pH within these organelles, thus interfering with the activity of many lysosomal enzymes. Altering the intr...
