چکیده

Considering the high prevalence of non-convulsive Status epilepticus (NCSE) in emergency admissions of patients with altered mental state and the high proportion of cross-sectional imaging performed in this patient cohort, imaging marker suggesting an epileptic origin of the clinical symptoms and – even more critical – indicating ongoing seizure activity would potentially modify therapeutic decisions and patients outcome. In this article we review the cross-sectional imaging techniques to identify pathophysiological processes related to epileptic activity. We discuss the diagnostic potential of brain perfusion imaging to detect hemodynamic correlates of epileptic activity and structural imaging to identify the sequelae of prolonged epileptic activity e.g. cytotoxic/vasogenic edema, gliosis and brain atrophy. In the atlas part, we aim to include a number of cases of NCSE with representative imaging findings and discuss the correlation of the findings with the clinical semiology and epilepsy syndrome.

Hippocampal sclerosis and status epilepticus: cause or consequence? A MRI study.

BACKGROUND Transient imaging abnormalities, including changes on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), may be seen in status epilepticus. These abnormalities can be followed by hippocampal sclerosis. CASE REPORT We report a 15-year-old lady with focal non convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) and focal slowing on EEG. DWI exhibited abnormal hyperintense signals in bilateral temporal and insular co...

[Treatment of non-convulsive status epilepticus].

Non-convulsive status epilepticus is an insidious condition and a challenging diagnosis for neurologists on call. The condition must, however, be recognized, since it constitutes a neurological emergency. Non-convulsive status epilepticus may also be associated as an additional complication with an acute neurologic disease, in which case an EEG recording is usually required. In addition, non-co...

Non-convulsive status epilepticus in adults – an overview

Status epilepticus (SE) is the most frequent neurological emergency requiring admission on the intensive care unit (ICU). The classification of status epilepticus may be dichotomised into the “convulsive” and the “non-convulsive” form. Whereas the diagnosis of generalised convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE) is easily made in view of the evident manifestation, the diagnosis of nonconvulsive sta...

Thyroid-stimulating hormone elevation misdiagnosed as subclinical hypothyroidism following non-convulsive status epilepticus: a case report

INTRODUCTION Non-convulsive status epilepticus is a form of epileptic seizure that occurs without convulsions. Recent reviews suggest that the diagnosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus remains difficult. Here, we report the case of a patient with thyroid-stimulating hormone elevation misdiagnosed as subclinical hypothyroidism following non-convulsive status epilepticus. CASE PRESENTATION...
