Slips of the Tongue in Second Language Production
نویسنده
چکیده
Ever since the publication of Fromkin’s Slips of the Tongue in 1973, more and more psycholinguists have realized the importance of studying the slips of the tongue. Dell (1986) defined slips of the tongue as “unintended, nonhabitual deviation(s) from a speech plan”. That is, those speech errors are not due to an incomplete or incorrect language system, but to language processing problems. Most of the studies are focused on monolingual models. But, to bilinguals, are L2 slips different from L1 slips? Can those monolingual speech production models also explain L2 speech production? This article puts together Dell’s current monolingual model of speech with Poulisse’s L2 slip project to see how L2 slips can shed light on the process of L2 speech production and L2 learning process.

Language selection in bilingual speech: evidence for inhibitory processes.
Although bilinguals rarely make random errors of language when they speak, research on spoken production provides compelling evidence to suggest that both languages are active when only one language is spoken (e.g., [Poulisse, N. Speech errors reflect linguistic knowledge. For example, phonological errors follow languagewide phonotactic constraints such as the fact that [h] must be an onset in English. We review five experimental studies that demonstrate that errors adhere to artificial experiment-wide constraints (e.g. [f] must be an onset during this experiment) as well as language-wide constraints. These studies show...
متن کاملThe Role of Agreement in Natural Language
Historically, errors in spontaneous speech, i.e., slips of the tongue, have been collected and studied for various reasons. One motivation for collecting such errors and probably the most familiar one outside of linguistic circles was to gain insight into psychological repressions. Sigmund Freud (1901/1954), for instance, was convinced that slips of the tongue reveal our suppressed emotions and...
متن کاملPositive Feedback in Hierarchical Connectionist Models: Applications to Language Production
Recent connectionist models of the perception and production of words make use of positive feedback from later to earlier levels of processing. This paper focuses on production and identifies several specific effects of phoneme-tomorpheme feedback. In addition. I orgue that there is support for the use of this kind of feedback in production from experimental and naturalistic studies of slips of...

Collections of various types of speech errors have increased our understanding of the acquisition, production, and perception of language. Although such collections of naturally occurring language errors are invaluable for a number of reasons, the process of collecting various types of speech errors presents many challenges to the researcher interested in building such a collection, among them ...
