چکیده

The stalk of Carcliesium and Vorticella coils by the action of a contractile organelle. The organelle lies within a thread of cytoplasm which is encased in a complex extracellular tube. Study with the light microscope and the electron microscope suggests that the structure of the tube and the course of the organelle determine the form of the coiling. The contractile organelle contains a system of interconnected membranous tubules and the cytoplasm around it also contains membranous saccules. Both tubules and saccules extend along the length of the stalk.

Control of Cellular Contraction by Calcium in Vorticella

1. Vorticella extracted with Triton X-100 contracted (i.e. the cell body shrank and the stalk coiled) when the external Ca2+ concentration was raised. The degree of contraction increased with increasing Ca2+ concentration. 2. The threshold Ca2+ concentration for shrinkage of the cell body was identical with that for coiling of the stalk in Vorticella extracted with Triton X-100. 3. Living Vorti...

Colchicine Inhibition of Stalk Elongation

The effect of colchicine on stalk elongation in the colonial peritrich ciliate Carchesium sp. has been investigated by growing this protozoon in colchicine-containing media. The length of the stalk in control cultures was 0-4-0-9 mm. In the presence of 2-5-125 mM colchicine, stalk elongation was inhibited, and stalk length was inversely proportional to colchicine concentration. At concentration...

1 Introduction and Background

The rod-like, contractile stalk of the single-celled peritrich Vorticella Convalleria can collapse into a tightly coiled helix in less than 1/60 second, a rate ~1000 times its cell body size per second. The contractile stalk (25um-300um in length, ~ 4um diameter) consists of several membranes stiffened by extracellular fibers and helical assembly of larger protein bundles, known as batonets, su...

Prevalent Ciliate Symbiosis on Copepods: High Genetic Diversity and Wide Distribution Detected Using Small Subunit Ribosomal RNA Gene

Toward understanding the genetic diversity and distribution of copepod-associated symbiotic ciliates and the evolutionary relationships with their hosts in the marine environment, we developed a small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (18S rDNA)-based molecular method and investigated the genetic diversity and genotype distribution of the symbiotic ciliates on copepods. Of the 10 copepod species repre...
