Velocity-Encoded Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Diagnosing Severe Bilateral Subclavian Steal Syndrome with Complete Vertebral Reversal.

چکیده
UNLABELLED Subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) involves changes in hemodynamics secondary to proximal subclavian artery stenosis and/or occlusion where the subclavian artery "drains" the blood from the vertebral artery. It sometimes induces neuromuscular symptoms, especially in cases with bilateral involvement. We report the case of a 65-year-old symptomatic male with severe bilateral SSS with complete vertebral reversal. Doppler ultrasonography yielded inconclusive results because of a scar in the left lower neck region leading to poor acoustic windows. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography and velocity-encoded phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging provided the vascular morphology and blood flow pattern which allowed subsequent interventions to be successfully performed. KEY WORDS Angioplasty; Phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging; Subclavian steal syndrome.

Magnetic resonance angiography in subclavian steal syndrome.
A case is reported of a patient with the subclavian steal syndrome in whom the reversed blood flow of the vertebral artery was shown by phase encoded magnetic resonance angiography.
متن کاملBilateral Subclavian Steal Syndrome
Bilateral subclavian steal syndrome is a rare condition. It is usually due to reversal of vertebral blood flow in the setting of bilateral proximal subclavian or left subclavian plus innominate artery severe stenosis or occlusion. This finding may cause cerebral ischemia related to upper extremities exercise. We report a case of bilateral subclavian steal secondary to total occlusion of the inn...
متن کاملDiagnosis of Subclavian Steal Syndrome using a Novel Time-Resolved Magnetic Resonance Angiographic Technique
Introduction: The term Subclavian steal refers to reversal of normal direction of flow in the vertebral artery ipsilateral to severe stenosis/occlusion occurring between aortic arch and vertebral artery origin. The diagnosis of subclavian steal syndrome can be suggested by many techniques which include invasive angiography, noninvasive continuous wave Doppler ultrasonography of neck, multi-slic...
متن کاملRight subclavian steal syndrome in a patient with aberrant right subclavian artery, common carotid trunk and hypoplastic left vertebral artery
Introduction: Subclavian steal syndrome refers to the reversal of vertebral blood flow in the setting of proximal subclavian or innominate artery severe stenosis or occlusion resulting in the symptoms of vertebrobasilar insufficiency related to exercise of the upper extremities. It is more common on the left side. Case report: We reported a case of subclavian steal syndrome on the right side in...
متن کاملBilateral subclavian steal: a review of an unusual twist in a common disorder.
The authors present two cases of bilateral subclavian steal syndrome, a rare condition that does not commonly cause neurovascular symptoms. Lateralizing hemispheric events occur usually with carotid lesions. Vertebral-basilar insufficiency is three times more common in bilateral than in unilateral subclavian steal syndrome. Arm-exercise-induced brain-stem dysfunction is rare, and is seen only i...
