Less Is Better: When Low-value Options Are Valued More Highly than High-value Options

چکیده

This research demonstrates a less-is-better e€ect in three contexts: (1) a person giving a $45 scarf as a gift was perceived to be more generous than one giving a $55 coat; (2) an over®lled ice cream serving with 7 oz of ice cream was valued more than an under®lled serving with 8 oz of ice cream; (3) a dinnerware set with 24 intact pieces was judged more favourably than one with 31 intact pieces (including the same 24) plus a few broken ones. This less-is-better e€ect occurred only when the options were evaluated separately, and reversed itself when the options were juxtaposed. These results are explained in terms of the evaluability hypothesis, which states that separate evaluations of objects are often in ̄uenced by attributes which are easy to evaluate rather than by those which are important. # 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Real option evaluation in fuzzy environment∗

Financial options are known from the financial world where they represent the right to buy or sell a financial value (mostly a stock) for a predetermined price (the exercise price), without having the obligation to do so. Real options in option thinking are based on the same principals as financial options. In real options, the options involve real assets as opposed to financial ones. To have a...

Information Systems Project Continuation in Escalation Situations: A Real Options Model

Software project escalation has been shown to be a widespread phenomenon. With few exceptions, prior research has portrayed escalation as an irrational decision-making process whereby additional resources are plowed into a failing project. In this article, we examine the possibility that in some cases managers escalate their commitment not because they are acting irrationally, but rather as a r...

Valuing Real Options without a Perfect Spanning Asset

The real options approach to corporate investment decision making recognizes a firm can delay an investment decision and wait for more information concerning project cash-flows. The well known models of McDonald and Siegel (1986) and Dixit and Pindyck (1994) value the investment decision as a perpetual American call option on the project value. The former specifies the equilibrium return via CA...

Policy options for value added to different levels of production

This paper presents an analytic procedure for the value added to different production levels with different policy options. The approach is stochastic and thus provides a framework for informed decision-making on productivity growth under uncertainty conditions. The model was applied to data collected from a firm and re-sults recommend that the firm should redevelop if in diversification and sy...

Numerical Methods versus Bjerksund and Stensland Approximations for American Options Pricing

Numerical methods like binomial and trinomial trees and finite difference methods can be used to price a wide range of options contracts for which there are no known analytical solutions. American options are the most famous of that kind of options. Besides numerical methods, American options can be valued with the approximation formulas, like Bjerksund-Stensland formulas from 1993 and 2002. Wh...
