Flying with complexity; bringing touch screens into the cockpit

This paper studies the concept of complexity within a specific domain, the civil aviation. The concept is discussed presenting the different "dimensions of complexity" that operators, managers or designers in this particular socio-technical system have to cope with. A specific example of how a single technology can impact on these different dimensions is provided, presenting a possible future scenario of touch screens based cockpit as envisaged within ALICIA, an European Commission funded Project.
