Spin Relaxation in Nematogensand their Deuterated Derivatives

چکیده
A brief review of spin relaxation (1) in nematogens is given. The usual problems in this area arise from the lack of a good theoretical model and a spin system in which meaningful measurements and direct comparison with the model can be made. The proton and deuteron spin-lattice relaxation in nematics have been extensively studied both theoretically (2,3) and experimentally (4-8). It is generally agreed that the total proton relaxation rate is the sum of two contributions

Spin-lattice Relaxation of Reorienting or Tunneling Deuterated Methyl Groups
Tae spin-lattice relaxation of deuterated methyl groups, which is exponential at high temperatures, becomes non-exponential at low temperatures as evidence of the coupling between the Zeeman and tunneling systems. The dominant relaxation is considered to be the quadrupole interaction. Experimental results at liquid nitrogen and liquid helium temperatures support the theoretical model.
متن کاملAnisotropic Spin -Lattice Relaxation of Deuterated Hexamethylbenzene
The anisotropic spin-lattice relaxation of deuterated hexamethy lbenzene (HMB-d,,) was measured at -36 and 70°C. The anisotropy is due to the anisotropic sixfold reorientation of the molecule about its hexad axis, and a model is presented to explain quantitatively the anisotropy, considering only single-particle relaxation. The temperature dependence of T, was measured, and the activation energ...
متن کاملCommunication: Dissolution DNP reveals a long-lived deuterium spin state imbalance in methyl groups.
We report the generation and observation of long-lived spin states in deuterated methyl groups by dissolution DNP. These states are based on population imbalances between manifolds of spin states corresponding to irreducible representations of the C3v point group and feature strongly dampened quadrupolar relaxation. Their lifetime depends on the activation energies of methyl group rotation. Wit...
متن کاملMEASUREMENT OF DEUTERON SPIN RELAXATION TIMES IN LIQUID CRYSTALS by a BROADBAND EXCITATION SEQUENCE
Liquid crystals are composed of flexible organic molecules and capable of forming different ordered structures in their mesophases. Nuclear spin relaxation [1], [2] is a powerful technique that provides useful information on the molecular dynamics of liquid crystals. There are collective director fluctuations, molecular reorientation and internal rotations in flexible end chains. Recently inter...
متن کاملThe spatial effect of protein deuteration on nitroxide spin-label relaxation: Implications for EPR distance measurement
Pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR) coupled with site-directed spin labeling is a powerful technique for the elucidation of protein or nucleic acid, macromolecular structure and interactions. The intrinsic high sensitivity of electron paramagnetic resonance enables measurement on small quantities of bio-macromolecules, however short relaxation times impose a limit on the sensitiv...
