This change of stress state causes impact on rock structure and strength, thus affecting the evaluation of wellbore stability. Especially for determining initial mud pressure, unloading is a significant influence factor. Clay-rich shale formation is well-known for high risk of borehole collapsing, appropriate mud pressure is necessary to stabilize wellbore. Therefore, the unloading influence needs to be considered when it comes to selection of initial mud pressure.

Physical and geochemical characteristics of shale play conclusive role in confirming operation measures during drilling and stimulation. The properties of shale samples from Jiyang depression were investigated through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, adsorption isothermal, high pressure mercury intrusion, methylene blue trihydrate, pressure pulse decay, tests of specific water w...
متن کاملPreferred Orientations and Anisotropy in Shales: Callovo-oxfordian Shale (france) and Opalinus Clay (switzerland)
Anisotropy in clay-rich sedimentary rocks is receiving increasing attention. Seismic anisotropy is essential in the prospecting for petroleum deposits. Anisotropy of diffusion has become relevant for environmental contaminants, including nuclear waste. In both cases, the orientation of component minerals is a critical ingredient and, largely because of small grain size and poor crystallinity, t...
متن کاملWellbore Stability in Shale Formation Using Analytical and Numerical Simulation
Optimization of drilling fluid parameters such as mud weight, salt concentration, and temperature is essential to alleviate instability problems during drilling through shale sections. The selection of suitable mud parameters can benefit from analyses that consider significant instability processes involved in shale-drilling–fluid interactions. This paper describes the development of analytical...

The characterization of gas migration through low-permeability clay formations has been a focus of R&D programs for radioactive waste disposal, which is also of great importance for shale-gas exploration, and cap-rock behavior of hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 sequestration. Laboratory tests on Opalinus clay cores from a shallow borehole in the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory (URL) a...
متن کاملDepositional Environments of Oil Shale in the Green River Formation, Douglas Creek Arch, Colorado and Utah
Douglas Creek arch in western Colorado and eastern Utah separates the Uinta and Piceance Creek basins. During deposition of the lower part of the Eocene Green River Formation, the arch provided a physical barrier dividing ancient Lake Uinta into two segments. As the lake expanded, the arch became a shoal area where marginal-lacustrine and mud flat sediment was deposited. Near the end of Green R...
