Towards Operational Flood Mapping with Satellite Sar
نویسندگان
چکیده
Space-borne SAR sensors are of special interest for mapping flood extent due to the possibility to acquire images in all weather conditions. In this article we review the SAR part of an operational flood mapping service. An operational service requires fully automatic methods that are able to process any available SAR data in near-real time. Mapping flood with SAR requires different approaches for open, forested and urban areas. We consider and demonstrate algorithms for the different cases. Further, we review factors that makes flood detection with SAR challenging, and how these cases can be handled with the use of auxiliary data.

A Neural Network Approach to Flood Mapping Using Satellite Imagery
This paper presents a new approach to flood mapping using satellite synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images that is based on intelligent techniques. In particular, we apply artificial neural networks, self-organizing Kohonen’s maps (SOMs), for SAR image segmentation and classification. Our approach was used to process data from different satellite SAR instruments (ERS-2/SAR, ENVISAT/ASAR, RADARSA...

This thesis is an outcome of the project “Flood and damage assessment using very high resolution SAR data” (SAR-HQ), which is embedded in the interdisciplinary oriented RIMAX (Risk Management of Extreme Flood Events) programme, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It comprises the results of three scientific papers on automatic near real-time flood detection in high ...
متن کاملTowards operational near real-time flood detection using a split-based automatic thresholding procedure on high resolution TerraSAR-X data
In this paper, an automatic near-real time (NRT) flood detection approach is presented, which combines histogram thresholding and segmentation based classification, specifically oriented to the analysis of single-polarized very high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data. The challenge of SAR-based flood detection is addressed in a completely unsupervised way, which assumes no...
متن کامل3d Flood Information from Sar as a Means for Reducing Uncertainties in Flood Inundation Modeling
SAR images of river inundation prove to be very relevant for operational flood management. However, common exploitation of satellite images of floods is generally restricted to a flood extent extraction. The usefulness of these images could be significantly improved by providing a hydraulic-coherent 3-dimensional (3D) characterization of floods and by integrating these Remote Sensing-Derived (R...

Hydrological data collection requires deployment of physical infrastructure like rain gauges, water level gauges, as well as use of expensive equipment like echo sounders. Many countries around the world have recorded a decrease in deployment of physical infrastructure for hydrological measurements; developing countries especially have less of this infrastructure and, where it exists, it is poo...
