Acute Epidural Hematoma after Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Insertion: a Case Report

Background & Importance: Acute epidural hematoma is a very rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. The insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt can cause sudden decompression of the brain, subsequent to which epidural hematoma occurs due to CSF drainage. To our knowledge, there are only a few cases of acute epidural hematoma in the literature which required acute e...

Success rates and complications of ventriculoperitoneal and ventriculoatrial shunting: A systematic review

Background and Aims: The insertion of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) and ventriculoatrial (VA) shunts is the first-line treatment of patients with hydrocephalus and normal-pressure hydrocephalus. The provision of a safety profile for shunting in the treatment of hydrocephalus patients is very important. This study aimed to determine the success rates and complications of VP and VA shunting in patien...

Acute Shunt Failure Due to Perforation of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Tubing during Percutaneous Gastrostomy

The placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in a patient with a pre-existing ventriculoperitoneal shunt is generally regarded as safe. A critical but often overlooked technical consideration is confirmation of the course of the distal shunt tube prior to PEG insertion. We present the case of a 4-month-old male infant with shunted hydrocephalus who experienced shunt malfunction ...

A rare cause of pediatric urinary incontinence: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt with bladder perforation

We present a case of 2-year-old boy with long term dysuria and intermittent incontinence, and new onset of fever and headache. Significant past medical history includes congenital hydrocephalus with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement two years prior to consult. On physical examination, a tubular structure was noted underneath the prepuce suspected to be the distal tip of ventriculoperitonea...

Scrotal migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt: a case report and review of literature.

Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion may be associated with migration into the abdominal wall, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, vagina, scrotum, and mediastinum. Migration of the VP shunt into the scrotum has been rarely reported. We present a 1 year old boy with cerebrospinal fluid hydrocele due to the migration of a VP shunt catheter into the right side scrotum.
