چکیده

The overall incidence of intraoperative awareness with recall is about 0.2–3%,1 but it may be > 40% in certain high risk patients, like, those with multiple trauma, caesarean section, cardiac surgery and haemodynamically unstable patients.2 Intraoperative awareness is a major medico-legal liability to the anaesthesiologists and can lead to postoperative psychosomatic dysfunction in the patient, and therefore should be avoided at all costs.3

A study of anaesthesia depth by power spectral analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG).

The feasibility of using computer-based EEG spectral analysis to monitor the level of anaesthesia during nitrous oxide-alphaprodine anaesthesia has been established by this study. At present, this system is capable of estimating the level of anaesthesia correctly from 55 per cent to 80 per cent of the time. There are several possible clinical applications of such a monitoring system during anae...

A comparison of bispectral index and entropy monitoring, in patients undergoing embolization of cerebral artery aneurysms after subarachnoid haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND Processed EEG monitoring of anaesthetic depth could be useful in patients receiving general anaesthesia following subarachnoid haemorrhage. We conducted an observational study comparing performance characteristics of bispectral index (BIS) and entropy monitoring systems in these patients. METHODS Thirty-one patients of the World Federation of Neurosurgeons grades 1 and 2, undergoin...

Depth of anaesthesia monitoring: what's available, what's validated and what's next?

Depth of anaesthesia monitors might help to individualize anaesthesia by permitting accurate drug administration against the measured state of arousal of the patient. In addition, the avoidance of awareness or excessive anaesthetic depth might result in improved patient outcomes. Various depth of anaesthesia monitors based on processed analysis of the EEG or mid-latency auditory-evoked potentia...

Monitoring the Depth of Anaesthesia

One of the current challenges in medicine is monitoring the patients' depth of general anaesthesia (DGA). Accurate assessment of the depth of anaesthesia contributes to tailoring drug administration to the individual patient, thus preventing awareness or excessive anaesthetic depth and improving patients' outcomes. In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of studi...

EEG signal processing in anaesthesia. Use of a neural network technique for monitoring depth of anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND The Bispectral Index (BIS) is a proprietary index of anaesthesia depth, which is correlated with the level of consciousness and probability of intraoperative recall. The present study investigates the use of a neural network technique to obtain a non-proprietary index of the depth of anaesthesia from the processed EEG data. METHODS Two hundred patients, who underwent general abdomi...

Anaesthesia Monitoring by Recurrence Quantification Analysis of EEG Data

Appropriate monitoring of the depth of anaesthesia is crucial to prevent deleterious effects of insufficient anaesthesia on surgical patients. Since cardiovascular parameters and motor response testing may fail to display awareness during surgery, attempts are made to utilise alterations in brain activity as reliable markers of the anaesthetic state. Here we present a novel, promising approach ...
