چکیده

These SOAP project Pacific Ocean measurements reveal that phytoplankton blooms with sunny conditions make possible secondary organic contribution to ultrafine particles size and composition, and thus on cloud formation ability, and finally on climate. This is in agreement with other biologically active region observations about the presence of secondary organics even the exact fraction is also depending on the local marine life (e.g. plankton blooms, seaweeds, corals). An organic contribution is clearly needed to add to CLAW hypothesis. Keywords—Climate, marine aerosols, phytoplankton, secondary organics, CLAW hypothesis.

Microbial Control of Sea Spray Aerosol Composition: A Tale of Two Blooms

With the oceans covering 71% of the Earth, sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles profoundly impact climate through their ability to scatter solar radiation and serve as seeds for cloud formation. The climate properties can change when sea salt particles become mixed with insoluble organic material formed in ocean regions with phytoplankton blooms. Currently, the extent to which SSA chemical composi...

Differing growth responses of major phylogenetic groups of marine bacteria to natural phytoplankton blooms in the western North Pacific Ocean.

Growth and productivity of phytoplankton substantially change organic matter characteristics, which affect bacterial abundance, productivity, and community structure in aquatic ecosystems. We analyzed bacterial community structures and measured activities inside and outside phytoplankton blooms in the western North Pacific Ocean by using bromodeoxyuridine immunocytochemistry and fluorescence in...

Enhancement of marine phytoplankton blooms by appendicularian grazers

Short-lived blooms of large phytoplankton are the main vector in the atmosphere–ocean–sediment carbon flux and are associated with high fish production. A common assumption is that grazing zooplankton can only have a negative effect on the growth of these blooms. We have found that appendicularians, the most abundant microphagous metazoans, strongly stimulate the magnitude of experimentally ind...

Phytoplankton influences on tropical climate

[1] We study the effect of ocean biology on tropical surface temperatures using a simplified coupled atmosphere-ocean model. It is shown that moderate phytoplankton blooms, occuring e.g. during La Niña conditions, lead to a vertical redistribution of heat in the surface layers and an associated surface layer warming of about 20 W/m. The positive airsea coupling in the eastern equatorial Pacific...

Cycling of colloidal organic carbon and nitrogen during an estuarine phytoplankton bloom

To establish the influence of phytoplankton blooms on the cycling of dissolved and particulate species of organic carbon and nitrogen, we conducted a field study during a series of blooms in a coastal embayment on Shelter Island, NY. Using cross-flow filtration, we collected highand low-molecular-weight (HMW and LMW) dissolved organic matter (DOM), along with particulate organic matter (POM). T...
