چکیده

Interim Reports on work of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis receive only limited review. Views or opinions expressed herein do not necessarily represent those of the Institute, its National Member Organizations, or other organizations supporting the work. Abstract This paper presents a software package EDGE, an Earthquake and Damage Generator/ Estimator for Toscana, Italy. EDGE creates samples of multidimensional distributions of damage using models of geophysical processes, seismic-geophysical data and a catalog of vulnerability of buildings in the region. The main algorithmic elements: seismic maps, geophysical formulas, and stochastic modeling, are described in detail. The work contributes to a joint research program of Dynamic Systems, and Risk Modeling and Society projects on data-based methodological support for decision making in the insurance industry against risks of natural catastrophes. The designed catalogs of expected damages can be used for actuarial calculations and optimization of the regional insurance portfolio. iv Acknowledgments The authors would like to thank A.Amendola, Yu.Ermoliev, A.Kryazhimskii, and A.Tarasiev for their scientific advice and help during the work on this paper. This work could not be done without the data and formulas provided by Prof. Petrini from IRRS (Istituto per la' Ricerca sul Rischio Sismico, CNR, Milan, Italy) whose cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. Modeling human casualties in different overnight earthquake scenarios based on the FAlM model (Case study: Kianpars neighborhood of Ahvaz metropolis)

Background and objective: Disasters in recent years have shown that communities and individuals have become increasingly vulnerable and risks have increased. However, risk reduction and vulnerability are often overlooked until after the disaster. The occurrence of a possible earthquake is predicted and examined in line with the main purpose of this study. Method: This research is applied in te...

Interactive approach for GIS-based earthquake scenario development and resource estimation (Karmania hazard model)

The Karmania Hazard Model (KHM) is a GIS-based application for earthquake scenario development and disaster management. The lack of integrated and automated tools for estimating resources needed in the aftermath of an earthquake during the disaster response phase motivated the design and implementation of a comprehensive, interactive, and user-friendly model. This model draws on datasets integr...

Scenario Simulation Group Reactions to the Aftermath of the Great ShakeOut Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake

This paper demonstrates a novel approach for learning about earthquake victims behavioral responses to an emergency situation in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. Researchers developed an emergency scenario that describes students’ reactions following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that leads to complications that escalate over eight episodes. Subjects were assigned to scenario simulation g...

A Framework for a Scenario Driven Decision Support Systems Generator

Traditional Decision Support Systems (DSS) provide strong data management, modelling and visualisation capabilities for the decision maker but they do not explicitly support scenario management appropriately. Systems that purport to support scenario planning are complex and difficult to use and do not fully support all phases of scenario management. We introduce scenario as a core component of ...

Challenges of Management System in Temporary Accommodation after Natural Disasters in Iran From Gilan-Zanjan Earthquake (1990) to Kermanshah Earthquake (2017)

Many countries in the world have experienced different sorts of disasters and consequently have suffered large losses of life and property. After disasters, there are three possible scenarios: in the first scenario, available (current) accommodation is not ruined, as a result no gap will be created; the second scenario declares that the current housing is ruined and the available gap will be fi...
