چکیده

Despite extensive infection control measures against parasitic diseases, hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, still occurs in a minor group of our population. If the infection is not treated adequately, it goes on to developing life-threatening complications, one of which is hepatopulmonary fistula. These complications usually warrant early surgical intervention, or else may lead to extensive sepsis and ultimately death. We discuss the case of an elderly female suffering from pulmonary hydatid disease, further complicated by a hepatopulmonary fistula and underwent surgical treatment. This case emphasises the importance of early recognition of pulmonary hydatid disease given its atypical nature of presentation before the disease is further exacerbated by this aggressive complication. Furthermore, it is imperative to incorporate radical surgery as the first-line treatment in established hepatopulmonary fistula, in order to prevent further clinical deterioration and curative outcome.

Intrabiliary rupture of a hydatid cyst

Hydatid disease is a parasitic zoonotic disease that still remains an important healthcare issue in many countries worldwide. Liver is the most common host of the hydatid cysts. The cyst may rupture into the bile duct, as occurs in 5-25% of cases [1]. This complication may be associated with acute cholangitis and life-threatening sepsis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is ...

Hepatopulmonary syndrome: use of extracorporeal life support for life-threatening hypoxia following liver transplantation.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome is an uncommon complication of nonacute liver failure, and in rare cases, hypoxia may be the presenting sign of liver dysfunction. The condition, once thought to be a contraindication, is improved in most cases by transplantation. There is a significant risk of postoperative, hypoxia-related morbidity and mortality in patients with hepatopulmonary syndrome. We present a...

Hepatobronchial fistula caused by hydatid disease. The Dunedin experience 1952-79.

Despite intensive hydatid control measures in New Zealand, hepatopulmonary fistula resulting from infection by the echinococcus granulosus still occurs. Although the patients may quickly become debilitated from coughing bile and pus and associated septic complications, appropriate surgical therapy is usually effective. The exact diagnosis may be obscure, but it is helped by a high index of susp...
