Foundations of Dominant Strategy Mechanisms

چکیده

Wilson (1987) criticizes the existing literature of game theory as relying too much on common-knowledge assumptions. In reaction to Wilson’s critique, the recent literature of mechanism design has started employing simpler mechanisms such as dominant strategy mechanisms. However, there has been little theory behind this approach. In particular, it has not been made clear why, when a mechanism designer is not willing to make strong common-knowledge assumptions, she would respond by using simpler mechanisms instead of even more complicated ones. This paper tries to fill the void and investigates some foundations for using simpler mechanisms such as dominant strategy mechanisms. JEL: C70, D82

(No) Foundations of Dominant-Strategy Mechanisms: A Comment on Chung and Ely (2007)

This comment revisits Chung and Ely’s [6] paper in which robustly optimal auctions where investigated. Chung and Ely used a maxmin approach to define robust optimality. Chung and Ely provided conditions under which dominant strategy auctions are robustly optimal in their sense. This comment argues that Chung and Ely’s maxmin definition of robustly optimal auctions requires too little of an opti...

On the Foundations of Ex Post Incentive Compatible Mechanisms

Motivation. The recent literature on mechanism design provides a series of studies on robustness issues, motivated by the idea that a desirable mechanism should not rely too heavily on the agents’ common knowledge structure (Wilson, 1985). One approach is to adopt stronger solution concepts that are insensitive to various common knowledge assumptions, such as dominant-strategy incentive compati...

An Activity Theoretical Investigation into the Dominant Composition and Translation Activities of EFL learners across Persian and English

The present study aimed at investigating the impact of a genre-specific strategy-based instructional inter- vention on translation quality, dominant translation and writing activities in the persuasive essays of a group of EFL learners within the perspective of activity theory. The main purpose of the study was to see, taking translation as a sort of writing in its own right, whether the ...

Comparison of coping mechanisms used by suicidal attempt patients, and those without suicidal history

Introduction: Care of suicidal attempted patient is a challenging task for all health care providers. Coping mechanisms reduce suicide probability by decreasing severity of stressors. Therefore, we aimed at investigating the coping mechanisms used by suicidal attempted patients referred to hospital. Methods: In this case-control study, cases (n= 50) were selected conveniently among patients r...

Secure implementation experiments: Do strategy-proof mechanisms really work?

† We thank anonymous referees and an associate editor for their useful comments. 2 ABSTRACT Strategy-proofness, requiring that truth-telling is a dominant strategy, is a standard concept used in social choice theory. Saijo et al. (2003) argue that this concept has serious drawbacks. In particular, many strategy-proof mechanisms have a continuum of Nash equilibria, including equilibria other tha...
