Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) has received considerable attention as a biomass crop for potential conversion to ethanol. Recent assessment of switchgrass, relative to its potential as a long-term biomass source, has been made with associated agronomic, physiological, and genetic considerations (McLaughlin and Kszos, 2005). When assessing agronomic aspects such as land suitability, seeding rate, and nitrogen fertilizer relative to profi t potential, breakeven prices were found to be sensitive to dry matter (DM) yield and nitrogen (N)-fertilizer and fuel prices (Mooney et al., 2009). Addressing the yield aspect, Sanderson et al. (1996) noted that the lowland ecotypes in the lower United States were generally superior to the upland ecotypes, and in their study the cultivar ‘Alamo’ was their cultivar of choice because of its consistently greater yield of dry matter and its wider degree of adaptability. In the conversion of biomass to ethanol, biomass with greater cellulose and lesser lignin content is favored, Registration of ‘Colony’ Lowland Switchgrass

Chloroplast Genome Variation in Upland and Lowland Switchgrass
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) exists at multiple ploidies and two phenotypically distinct ecotypes. To facilitate interploidal comparisons and to understand the extent of sequence variation within existing breeding pools, two complete switchgrass chloroplast genomes were sequenced from individuals representative of the upland and lowland ecotypes. The results demonstrated a very high degree...
متن کاملSwitchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) Genotypes Differ between Coastal Sites and Inland Road Corridors in the Northeastern US
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a North American grass that exhibits vast genetic diversity across its geographic range. In the Northeastern US, local switchgrass populations were restricted to a narrow coastal zone before European settlement, but current populations inhabit inland road verges raising questions about their origin and genetics. These questions are important because switchgr...
متن کاملNucleotide polymorphism and copy number variant detection using exome capture and next-generation sequencing in the polyploid grass Panicum virgatum
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a polyploid, outcrossing grass species native to North America and has recently been recognized as a potential biofuel feedstock crop. Significant phenotypic variation including ploidy is present across the two primary ecotypes of switchgrass, referred to as upland and lowland switchgrass. The tetraploid switchgrass genome is approximately 1400 Mbp, split betwe...
متن کاملGenetic diversity in tetraploid switchgrass revealed by AFLP marker polymorphisms.
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a perennial warm-season grass native to North America that has been identified as a dedicated cellulosic biofuel crop. We quantified genetic diversity in tetraploid switchgrass germplasm collected at Oklahoma State University and characterized genetic relatedness among the collections from distinct regions. Fifty-six tetraploid accessions, including seven...
متن کاملSwitchgrass Cultivar/Ecotype Selection and Management for Biofuels in the Upper Southeast USA
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), a perennial warm-season grass indigenous to the eastern USA, has potential as a biofuels feedstock. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of upland and lowland switchgrass cultivars under different environments and management treatments. Four cultivars of switchgrass were evaluated from 2000 to 2001 under two management regimes in plot...
