چکیده

In this paper a finite volume method approach is used to model the 2D compressible and immiscible two-phase flow of water and gas in heterogeneous porous media. We consider a model describing water-gas flow through engineered and geological barriers for a deep repository of radioactive waste. We consider a domain made up of several zones with different characteristics: porosity, absolute permeability, relative permeabilities and capillary pressure curves. This process can be formulated as a coupled system of partial differential equations (PDEs) which includes a nonlinear parabolic gas-pressure equation and a nonlinear degenerated parabolic water-saturation equation. Both equations are of diffusion-convection types. An implicit vertex-centred finite volume method is adopted to discretize the coupled system. A Godunov-type method is used to treat the convection terms and a conforming finite element method with piecewise linear elements is used for the discretization of the diffusion terms. An upscaling technique is developed to obtain an effective capillary pressure curve at the interface of two media. Our numerical model is verified with 1D semianalytical solutions in heterogeneous media. We also present 2D numerical results to demonstrate the signifB. Modeling and Numerical Simulations of Immiscible Compressible Two-Phase Flow in Porous Media by the Concept of Global Pressure

A new formulation is presented for the modeling of immiscible compressible two-phase flow in porous media taking into account gravity, capillary effects and heterogeneity. The formulation is intended for the numerical simulation of multi-dimensional flows and is fully equivalent to the original equations, unlike the one introduced in Chavent and Jaffré (1986). The main feature of this formulati...

The role of biofilms in subsurface transport processes

Landfill and radioactive waste disposal risk assessments focus on contaminant transport and are principally concerned with understanding the movement of gas, water and solutes through engineered barriers and natural groundwater systems. However, microbiological activity can impact on transport processes changing the chemical and physical characteristics of the subsurface environment. Such effec...

An Integrated Simulation Model for the Performance Assessment of a Radioactive Waste Repository

Disposal facilities for radioactive wastes comprise a series of engineered and natural (geologic) barriers to contain the radionuclides until their radiation hazard has decreased to acceptable levels. It is required that the long-term functionality of the containment barriers be evaluated by a quantitative risk analysis, also termed performance assessment. This entails the implementation of a P...

Inverse Modeling of Gas, Water, and Heat Flow in Bentonite/crushed Rock Backfill

Swelling clays play a major role in current concepts for the underground disposal of high-level nuclear waste in deep geological formations. In one of the multi-barrier concepts for preventing the escape of radioactive substances from a high-level nuclear waste repository, the barrier consists of a copper container, compacted bentonite as buffer and backfill (the engineered barrier), and the re...

Compositional Two-Phase Flow in Saturated-Unsaturated Porous Media: Benchmarks for Phase Appearance/Disappearance

Résumé. The two test cases presented herein aimed at simulating the transport migration of nuclides around a nuclear waste repository and belong to the "Two-Phases Numerical Test Data Base" presented in [1], [2]. They were initially designed in the framework of the French research group MoMaS [3]. The starting point in designing all the test cases presented in [1] comes from some of the main ch...
