sub-agencies. Another feature of Larson’s EPA chapter includes private or subscription-based resources such as Westlaw, the EPA’s own site records made available through Westlaw rather than through EPA itself, the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) news services, Inside Washington Publishers environmental news publications, and Law Reporters, Inc. specializing in providing information on EPA administrative affairs. The remaining agencies are covered in similar fashion by Ellen Sweet (Education Department), Richard McKinney (the Fed), Stephanie Young (FTC), Laura Hjerpe (USPTO), Deirdre Clarkin (FDIC), and Leslie Lee and Michelle Wu (DOJ). Lee and Wu provide eleven extremely useful charts consisting of four columns: Document Type, URL, Scope/Content, and Search Tips/Comments/Contacts. Charts arrange information by legislation; regulations; decisions and other administrative issuances; briefs; links to publications Web pages; forms, handbooks, and manuals; annual reports; archived speeches, press/news releases and testimony; statistics, reports, and studies; policy and procedures statements, manuals, memoranda, and guidance; and directories. Those familiar with the Superintendent of Documents List of Classes will be intimately familiar with these broad categories! The charts, however, are very readable, and search tips are a pleasant surprise. The authors apparently spent considerable time preparing these charts, and most users ought to be grateful for them for sharing their expertise. The other chapters too contain much information but are arranged differently. This book (if one does not subscribe to Legal Reference Services Quarterly), despite the expected few URLs that have been eliminated or changed by agencies, gives a fairly neat and clean idea of what these regulatory agencies do and probably ought to be quickly ordered and available to most reference librarians whether in academia or public libraries. There are things included which experienced librarians may discover to be of great use, and as an introduction to these agencies, newer librarians would find this incisively-written, cost-effective text well worth having within reach or at least in the reference stacks.

helped along the way by generous annotations. The relationship between these two players shared a similar asymmetry as did Silver’s: the rhetorically nimble Cockerell confronting the laconic businessman, Pierce. The Grolier volume works better for me than Silver’s, though both are solid contributions to book history. The book comes with abundant illustrations and an annotated list of Lilly’s pu...

African American autobiography has a long, distinguished history dating back to the eighteenth century, when religious conversion and spiritual growth were the central themes written or dictated by men and women who were former slaves, such as the Gospel and Labours of George White (1810) and Memoir of Old Elizabeth (1863). Free blacks who wrote about their spiritual enlightenment include the f...
