چکیده

In this paper, we quantify the temporal opportunities for secondary access to radar spectrum. Secondary users are assumed to be WLANs which opportunistically share the radar frequency band under the constraint that the aggregate interference does not harm radar operation. Each WLAN device employs dynamic frequency selection (DFS) as a mechanis m to protect the radar from the interference. We also consider an advanced interference protection mechanism, which is termed temporal DFS. It explo its the temporal variat ion of interference power due to the periodic rotation of radar antenna. It is observed that the probability of accessing the radar spectrum is significantly higher when the temporal DFS is used compared to the conventional DFS. As a consequence, more W LANs can utilize the radar spectrum when the temporal DFS mechanism is considered. This shows that having better knowledge of the primary user activity can bring about the increased opportunity of secondary spectrum access to radar band, and thus improve the spectrum utilization.

Secondary access to the radar spectrum bands: Regulatory and business implications

The large expected increase in the capacity requirements raises not only technical issues but also regulatory and business challenges. One of the key methods to increase the capacity of mobile networks in a cost efficient way is to find additional frequency spectrum. However, it is a difficult task since most of the spectrum is already allocated in long-term basis. Therefore, innovation in the ...

On Finding Spectrum Opportunities in Cognitive Radios Spectrum Sensing and Geo-locations Database

The spectacular growth in wireless services imposes scarcity in term of the available radio spectrum. A solution to overcome this scarcity is to adopt what so called cognitive radio based on dynamic spectrum access. With dynamic spectrum access, secondary (unlicensed) users can access spectrum owned by primary (licensed) users when it is temporally and/or geographically unused. This unused spec...

Spectrum Sharing in the Gray Space

There has been considerable effort to let more wireless devices operate in “white space” spectrum, i.e. within frequency bands and geographic areas where no wireless devices are active. Making white space available is certainly useful, but there are other sharing opportunities as well, some of which have been obscured by dangerous misconceptions about the concept of “unused spectrum.” This pape...

Geo-location Spectrum Opportunities Database in Downlink Radar Bands for OFDM Based Cognitive Radios

In this paper a model to investigate the spectrum opportunities for cognitive radio networks in three radar frequency bands L, S and C at a specific location is introduced. We consider underlay unaware spectrum sharing model. The Secondary System we assume is an OFDM based system. The followed strategy is built upon defining a specific co or adjacent channel as a spectrum opportunity if -and on...

ARQ-based spectrum sharing with multiple-access secondary system

We consider a cognitive radio network in which a multiple-access secondary system coexists with an automatic repeat request (ARQ)-based primary system under heavy primary traffic. To achieve spectrum sharing without degrading the performance of the primary system, the secondary transmitters alternate between cooperation and access modes based on a credit system. In the cooperation mode, the sec...
