چکیده

We use the δN-formalism to investigate the non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation in the curvaton scenario for the origin of structure. We numerically calculate the full probability distribution function allowing for the non-instantaneous decay of the curvaton and compare this with analytic results derived in the sudden-decay approximation. We also present results for the leading-order contribution to the primordial bispectrum and trispectrum. In the suddendecay approximation we derive a fully non-linear expression relating the primordial perturbation to the initial curvaton perturbation. As an example of how non-Gaussianity provides additional constraints on model parameters, we show how the primordial bispectrum on CMB scales can be used to constrain variance on much smaller scales in the curvaton field. Our analytical and numerical results allow for multiple tests of primordial non-Gaussianity, and thus they can offer consistency tests of the curvaton scenario.

Generating the primordial curvature perturbation from inflation

The scale–independence of the primordial curvature perturbation suggests that it comes from the vacuum fluctuation during inflation of a light scalar field. This field may be the inflaton, or a different ‘curvaton’ field. The observation of primordial non–gaussianity would be a smoking gun for the curvaton model, while the observation of gravitational waves originating during slow–roll inflatio...

Non-gaussianity and Constraints for the Variance of Perturbations in the Curvaton Model

Recently, the primordial non-Gaussianity in the curvaton model has been predicted assuming sudden decay of the curvaton. We extend the calculation to non-instantaneous decay by employing δN formalism. The difference between the sudden-decay approximation and our numerical result is larger than 1% only if the non-linearity parameter is small, −1.16 < fNL < 60. Thus it is safe to use the sudden-d...

Non-linear isocurvature perturbations and non-Gaussianities

We study non-linear primordial adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations and their non-Gaussianity. After giving a general formulation in the context of an extended δN formalism, we analyse in detail two illustrative examples. The first is a mixed curvaton-inflaton scenario in which fluctuations of both the inflaton and a curvaton (a light isocurvature field during inflation) contribute to the p...

Non-Gaussianity and large-scale structure in a two-field inflationary model

Single-field inflationary models predict nearly Gaussian initial conditions, and hence a detection of non-Gaussianity would be a signature of the more complex inflationary scenarios. In this paper we study the effect on the cosmic microwave background and on large-scale structure from primordial nonGaussianity in a two-field inflationary model in which both the inflaton and curvaton contribute ...
